TOEFL Help

Hello there.

I was considering taking the TOEFL and was not sure if I should take the Computer based test or the Paper test? Do colleges accept both? If so, which ones easier?

What do you guys recommend?

Thanks

Colleges still accept both but I guess these tests are not administered any more in most countries. Where do you want to take TOEFL? I have never taken PBT before and I do not think that PBT and CBT are different in many ways. If you feel comfortable with computer go for CBT. You will get the score report earlier.

I gave the Computer based test......its really simple if u know the very basics of computer usage(like clicking a mouse, lol )....also i think the computer based test will be more student friendly than the paper based test...it will be more relaxing for you......go for the CBT......best of luck!

Yeah the above poster is right......u wil get an approximate score after u finish the CBT immediately.....btw which country r u from?

I am currently in the US but am going to take it in Dubai, U.A.E. I thought the CBT had a speaking sectoin which the PBT doesnt have? Isnt this a disadvantage?

Also, am not in a hurry for the TOEFL score so thats not an issue for me.. :)

Thanks

I thought the speaking section was coming up next year...thought I'm not sure at all........if tis there on CBT it will be there on PBT......they'll make u record ur voice soemhow I guess...........

I took a few practise exams of the CBT but did the PBT... I felt the latter was easier, but probably because it was more like the SAT, I felt, and I did them in the course of two weeks. But eventually I don't think that there will really be that much of a difference.

Take the CBT...Its more convinient if you have basic knowledge of computers.

CBT is very simple...there is no speaking section on it that is on the new Internet Based Toefl (IBT) , the IBT will be introduced in most countries very soon, I checked up and the first test date for the internet based toefl in Dubai is on 26 may, 06
The IBT is very new, and you will need to be familiar with it..see the toefl website for details (<a href="http://www.ets.org/portal/site/ets/menuitem.1488512ecfd5b8849a77b13bc3921509/?vgnextoid=f138af5e44df4010VgnVCM10000022f95190RCRD&vgnextchannel=b5f5197a484f4010VgnVCM10000022f95190RCRD%5B/url%5D">http://www.ets.org/portal/site/ets/menuitem.1488512ecfd5b8849a77b13bc3921509/?vgnextoid=f138af5e44df4010VgnVCM10000022f95190RCRD&vgnextchannel=b5f5197a484f4010VgnVCM10000022f95190RCRD</a>)

If you decide to do the CBT download the free powerprep software available on the toefl website or try this link
<a href="http://www.ets.org/portal/site/ets/menuitem.1488512ecfd5b8849a77b13bc3921509/?vgnextoid=f778af5e44df4010VgnVCM10000022f95190RCRD&vgnextchannel=da33197a484f4010VgnVCM10000022f95190RCRD%5B/url%5D">http://www.ets.org/portal/site/ets/menuitem.1488512ecfd5b8849a77b13bc3921509/?vgnextoid=f778af5e44df4010VgnVCM10000022f95190RCRD&vgnextchannel=da33197a484f4010VgnVCM10000022f95190RCRD</a></p>

if you decide on giving the IBT make sure you are familiar with the format! a sampler is available on the ibt website

No speaking section in CBT. Go for it. I got 280. It's easy. And type the essay if you can.

Dont take the toefl.. just a waste of money...

Get a good SAT-score and get the toefl waived by the colleges

Some colleges might not waive it and hence, I figure i'm better off taking it when I have the time.

Thanks for your help guys. I'll go ahead and register for the CBT :)

yeah smart choice man, do download the powerprep program, the two timed tests in it are exactly the way you will get them! the software they use is the same as on the actual tests tests.

Cool.. Thanks much :)

Ok, some colleges say that they waive the TOEFL if you've scored over 700 or something like that on the SAT Verbal section. Others say you don't have to take it if english is the primary language of instruction at your school. If this is the case, will not sending TOEFL scores affect you negatively or does it not really matter at all since they're only used for cuttoffs and to ensure you can speak/understand the language?

Listen to my life story:D: I paid $140 (plus $10 for calling up ETS in NJ to ask about my missing admission ticket, which remains missing to this day) to take this TOEFL PBT thing, and got 670 out of 677, which is supposed to be blockbuster. I sent my score to 3 out of my 7 schools (the other four all waived the TOEFL when you had this SAT Verbal cutoff), and guess what, all 3 schools rejected me. I did get in Amherst with a breath-taking aid package, and again guess what, Amherst NEVER got my TOEFL score!

Moral of the story: THE TOEFL IS A WASTE OF $$$! With your $140 you can take the SAT I twice and still have some change left for a decent SAT-prep book, so go pull your SAT CR up instead of trying to reason with that stupid test and the **** bureaucrats up at ETS. FYI registering for the TOEFL is a freaking pain in the neck too, and that's even when nothing goes wrong! Again FYI, all that adcoms do to your $140+$17 TOEFL score report is give it a glance to see if it's (close to) 600 PBT or 250 CBT or not. Then they toss it away. The SAT is much cheaper and matters a lot more in the process! Take this from a battered veteran!

I didn't have a lot of problem with TOEFL because I was from Singapore where the ONLY language of instruction in schools is English. So most universities which are familiar with us automatically waive TOEFL for us. Unfortunately Singaporeans typically apply to Ivies and all those research universities, but I'm applying to mainly LACs so I had some explaining to do. All the LACs I applied to waived TOEFL for me in the end less Bates, which insisted that all international students (whether or not they studied in english-medium schools) had to take TOEFL. I told them I am not going to waste my money on a stupid test like that (of course that isn't exactly what I said) and they said it's okay but I might be penalised. But I got in anyway, with a very generous financial aid package too.

But I don't know about you... It'll be good if you came from a school where English is the primary language of instruction. If not, maybe you should take TOEFL or at least score >700 on SAT Verbal.

Well... it depends on what college u wanna attend...
e.g. Yale requires TOEFL even if u score 800 on the verbal... so just check on the websites of the colleges u wanna attend

Hey.. I'm wazzup..

I downloaded the powerprep software and took a practice test... Here' what I got:

Listening - 26
Structure/Writing- 13 to 29
Reading - 27
Total - 220 to 273

Are those good scores? Whats are the listening and reading sections each out of?

What's da minimum score required in new sat to waivw toeflf? don thnk i can posibly take toefl bfore jan so i can send only my sat scores to them

I believe its 600
