TOEFL/IELTS

I will be applying to the US next year and I’m wondering whether I should take the TOEFL. I am an international student (english isn’t my first language), but I have been attending a British school here in my country since middle school. Also, I have 700 CR and 760 W on the sat. Do I still have to take the TOEFL? I dont do well on internet-based tests+ it seems like another waste of money. What do you think?

Some colleges require TOEFL if your mother language is not English regardless of your SAT scores.

In your case, some places will require an English Proficiency test, but others won’t. You have to check each website separately. If you can’t find information there, email the international admissions office and ask.

Since you have been attending a British school, you may be more comfortable with the format and content of the IELTS exam. When you are investigating the testing requirements, ask specifically whether or not they accept IELTS scores. Most places will.

Why do you think you’d struggle with the TOEFL?

I am curious what the internet has to do with it. While the “internet-based” TOEFL is administered on a computer in a test center, it just feels like another “computer-based” test. You won’t be interacting with the internet while you’re being tested. (e.g. the “speaking” part of the test is you giving a speech that’s recorded for later scoring, not you speaking to another live person via chat)

Before taking IELTS/TOEFL, contact the schools if they can waive TOEFL/IELTS

@b@r!um - No testing situation or format is automatically intuitive for all students. Some students require much more practice with testing in a given format before they are able to demonstrate their level of competence in the subject area. The TOEFL and IELTS are written by different companies and are designed to different specifications, fortunately most colleges and universities in the US will accept scores from either of them (some will accept scores from other exams as well). If the OP isn’t comfortable with the format of the TOEFL iBT, other options (including a paper-based TOEFL at some locations) are available.
