I'm a bit confused by the freshman application checklist on Maryland's website. It is made to sound that EVERYONE (not just non-native English speakers) are required to take the TOEFL. This seems ridiculous to me. I'm a native English speaker. Please tell me I don't have to pay $35 for this test just to appply to Maryland?

No, you don’t.

I believe you only have to take the TOEFL if you’re a non-native speaker and you didn’t score high enough on your SAT or APs. English isn’t my first language but I did well enough on the SAT and AP English that I didn’t need to take the TOEFL (hell I didn’t even need to take freshman English).

e: Hm, looking at their site it does seem like they require it if it wasn’t your first language. In all honesty, they’re not gonna do a background investigation to figure out if you learned English or another language first, and if your SAT/AP scores are good then it should be pretty obvious that you have a good grasp of the language.

Thank you both! English IS my first language, so I was just making sure that I wasn’t going to have to take the TOEFL!

Considering there are immigrants who write and speak English better than many US citizens, I don’t think you’ll have a problem as long as your scores are high and your essays are well written.
