Hi everyone. I’ve been in the USA for 5 years now and it’s my senior year so I finally started to have a legit college list and do some more research. Apparently some colleges require me to take the TOEFL but most colleges waive the requirement for me since I’ve stayed in the US for the last 5 years (none of the colleges that I’m applying to require me to take the TOEFL)… However, after a stressing conversation I had with my dad and my counselor, they told me to take the exam this month!! Then I decided to register for it but I only studied TOEFL for a year and it was about 2 years ago, I honestly don’t know what I’ll get on this test. I’m also taking the SAT in December. I’ve taken it twice before and couldn’t get the score I wanted (I got (1550-1650 range on both) Do you guys think taking the TOEFL would be beneficial for my application process or is it just an unnecessary information to add on my application form? (No I do not have a green card/Citizenship)
PS: I’ve lived here for 5 years now and I don’t even speak any languages other than English anymore. I’m also stressed out because taking the SATs, applying to colleges, writing personal statements, financial aid etc etc and If it really looks good on my application, that means I’m gonna have to take the TOEFL too. I don’t wanna put too much pressure on me.
Go to the library, and pick up a TOEFL review book. Read through it so you understand the format. The vocabulary is different from the SAT, and there are listening and speaking sections that mimic real-life situations in college.
@paul2752 Oh trust me, I’m at a high school where almost more than 50% of the students are international and there are so many kids who get 600-700+ on their CR sections. And the ones from Europe usually do better on their Math sections because we already learn Alg 2, Geometry, Precalc(SAT math subjects) by the time we start high school, but I should have gotten a higher score haha
Dude, There’s really nothing to study for in TOEFL. All you’ve got to do is follow instructions and know the format. I didn’t even study for it and got a 113 (international) and the only college that wanted it was ASU (well I’m aiming for Barrett’s so I had to take it). I find it a waste of money to buy books. You got YouTube, it’s great for TOEFL prep. My friend watched the videos alone and got a 108. You’ll be fine
