Does anyone know if the toefl is required by US permanent residents living abroad, and who got a 670 in SAT2:Writing? The cornell application instructions tell me not to but when i emailed them they said i do have to give it(i mailed them again 3 times but they havent replied for like 2 weeks). will someone clear out the confusion?

If english is your first language, it seems foolish to be required to take TOEFL anyways. Just call them and ask, and they'll tell you for sure.

What exactly does 'first language' mean?

It's the language you primarily speak at home. And i think you are exempted from the TOEFL if you score more or equal to 670 on th everbal test and maybe the writing test too

i speak chinese at home. born in china, lived there four years. then moved to canada for six more years, and finally moved here to the states and have been here for seven years. no way im taking the toelf

i just called them, they said that if u have at least a 670 in sat2:writing or sat1:verbal, then u dont need the toefl. your first language also needs to be english
