Toefl

what's a good score on the TOEFL, for top schools (Cornell especially)?
I wanna know if i should re-take. also . . . under what circumstances can the TOEFL be used to help bad SAT or ACT scores?
thanks!!!!!

100 and up is decent
110 is considered to be good.
I don't think that TOEFL score matters that much. Selective schools still want to see decent scores on your SAT/ACT.

yeah a 100 is considered good but 110 and above is excellent

so if one's SAT scores or ACT scores pass a certain mark, her TOEFL scores don't matter at all anymore?

some schools actually have that policy. That is if ur CR is around 600 they waive TOEFL for ya.

Even if they don't waive the TOEFL requirement by default, if you score say 800CR or 800W or something, I think you can write to the admissions office asking for an exemption.

this is my issue: i got a 116 on the TOEFL but only a 30 on the ACTs and a 2000 on the SATs, i'm gonna retake the ACTs and the SATs, but if i don't get above a 32 or a 2200, i was wondering if my TOEFL score could help a little bit with my sucky ACT and SAT scores

asianprincess, probably not. TOEFL is just used as a measure of English proficiency. And 2000 or 30 is not "only a". Well, maybe on CC...

yo asianprincess hauru07 is right ur scores are not ba well just only on CC where they have some abnormal students.

I'm applying to Cornell ED tho . . .
so . . . chances are 2000 and 30 are not good enough.

your toefl score is perfect, if you retake you will just waste 145$

asianprincess...could you say how many did you score in each part of the SAT?
If you have a perfect math score,I do not think that retaking is a good idea(provide that you do not live in the U.S),Cornell will see that with a 116 score on the iBT you have sufficient knowledge of english.Nevertheless if you have been living in the U.S for a long time,I think you should retake.

SAT: CR 590, W 700, M 710, comp 2000
ACT: comp 30, eng 32, math 35, reading 27, science 27
(I got a 36 on the state ACT w/o writing, could i superscore that and get a 31 composite? wishful thinking?)
SAT II: MATH II 790, Chem 690
TOEFL: reading 29, listening 29, speaking 30, writing 28, comp 116

I have an H4, I've been in the US since i was 9 (4th grade).
Therefore, I will be applying under international status w/o $aid (which only helps a tiny bit anyways).

Does that help?
Advice and opinions, honest and realistic ones, are WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME!

Thanks!

w/o $aid (which only helps a tiny bit anyways)
^Untrue...my peers who didn't apply for aid got in to many schools, and I got into like 2 with aid.

asianprincess..I think a 590 on the CR is low, considering the fact that you have been living in the U.S since 4th grade. If you can,try to rise your scores(SATI and SATII) to at least 750.

About the fin aid,it depends on the school police towards international students. If you are applying to schools that consider your financial situation you have a leg up.
