I think this has been brought up before, but here goes...On my Common App, I marked that I hold dual citizenship in Germany and the United States (which is true), and that German is spoken @ home (which is also true), BUT I started kindergarten in the states in English, so...am I exempt from the TOEFL requirment? Or should I just say that I speak English @ home, US citizen, etc.?

I was in the same situation, speak Russian at home but went to an American school since Kindergarden. I actually went ahead and took the TOEFL but Cornell didn't even look at it! If you've gone to an American high school, did well on the SATs, or lived in the US for an extended period of time you're exempt.

I think you should go ahead and mark down that you're German, I think it could help you by making you stand out. Don't worry about the TOEFL, it's not a big deal.

yeah i speak another language, which i basically learned at the same time as english. theyre sort of both my first languages, and i marked on the common app that i speak another language at home
however, i never took the toefl, and dont think i need to..i've gone to American schools all my life, never had a problem with English, never been in ESL and do really well in English class
so I don't think I have to take the toefl
