Whats an ideal score at TOEFL. Is it an imporant part of your application? Any advise for TOEFL test takers. Best time to take it?.. just a couple of questions about a topic tahts not very talked about here @ CC from what I've noticed.

Depends on which colleges you are applying to and your SAT score.
Since you’re aiming for top schools, you should get a really good SAT score. And if you have a decent CR score, you don’t even need to give TOEFL(I didin’t).

If English is not the medium of instruction at your school, give TOEFL. Other than that, each college has its own requirements. Check it out on the individual college websites.

So,
I got a 700 in CR.
Should I give TOEFL?

At some universities, TOEFL iBT is compulsory ain’t it?

I don’t know any university with compulsory TOEFL.

Oh, English is the medium of instruction. But what I’m saying is… does it pad up you’re application in any manner. I know I’ve got to get awesome SAT scores, will be studying hard.

UT Austin as far as I know does not waive TOEFL what so ever! Even if you score a 800 in CR!

It doesn’t boost your application, no. It will make up for a language deficiency, if it exists.

Nvm I’ll give the TOEFL. Better to have it than to not!

But seriously, the TOEFL is just stupid. Isn’t the SAT a good enough indicator of English proficiency?

^Second that!

SAT is good for written English stuff. The TOEFL seriously tests your spoken and general English comprehension. Don’t underestimate it.

UoM requires it.

so how do i find out whether they require it or not? do i just email them, informing them about my SAT CR scores and ask whether i need to give the toefl ?

@sam-sorry for posting a question on ur thread! :)

Check their websites, under the International section. Should be in a paragraph titled English proficiency or something.

ok, thanks!

@anirudh: Even I got a 700 in CR so Im really unsure whether to take TOEFL or not! It is after all a 4.5 hour test, and if I don’t have to take it, I’d rather not. So do colleges waive TOEFL if you get above a certain score in SAT I CR?

CollegeGirl101: The policy is different for every college, but generally if your native language is English, or if the medium of instruction in your school is English, then the TOEFL requirement is waived. I didn’t give it. You might need it for the visa though, I’m not sure. It depends on how good your spoken English is. Your visa officer might ask you for your standardized test scores, including TOEFL, though not having it is not a reason for rejection alone.

I’ll give it I guess. I’ll prepare for around 4-5 days and give it.
