A plus to being an hour away from the Canadian border…CBC/CBET television stations - better coverage IMO. A little more focus on Canadian athletes but a nice variety overall.
The weather has been hot and humid here in the Chicago area so we’ve been watching more Olympic coverage than expected. Two sports that surprised us when it comes to enjoyment are 3x3 basketball and handball. Something we’re looking forward to are the climbing events. Speed climbing sounds exciting.
I’m just joining this thread as I’m back home now with NBC on TV.
I’ve always detested NBC’s coverage and that certainly hasn’t changed. I grew up next to Canada and always had their coverage of the actual sports vs just commentaries, etc. The past few Olympics we’ve used Tunnel Bear to view BBC’s live events, but this year it seems BBC didn’t get rights?
Does anyone know any country that is showing the events live from Tokyo? Bonus points if it’s in English with French as a second option.
Sports I really like are Eventing (Equestrian) and H’s favorite is Sailing. Then both of us like canoeing/kayaking and some of the other odd ones that rarely get time on NBC. Neither of us are into the typical American loves of swimming, gymnastics, track and field, basketball, etc.
I’ve been able to watch some sailing at Olympic Sailing Live Streams & Schedule
There’s a race broadcast each day at 11 PM Eastern time. The minimum commentary that isn’t focused on the US sailors in the middle of the pack is refreshing.
A lot of the NBC coverage is live. If you’re up at 3 am, tune in. Even some of the evening stuff is live on the regular NBC channel, but unfortunately, it’s usually preliminary heats as that’s what is happening in Japan at 8 am.
Yeah, we had hoped NBC would be decent when it did live coverage, but compared to what BBC and Canada did in the past, it’s a bit lacking to be polite with my word choices.
Nonetheless, I’ll let H know about sailing being on tonight. Something is better than nothing.
I think the cross country part of equestrian is on this weekend.
I think I’ve become jaded, old, ornery or something. So far, much of what I watched has been less than desirable.
I love basketball, but I watched Team USA lose to France and Team USA couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. I watched Nigeria and Australia and they threw the ball around the court, like youth teams that I used to coach years ago. Just bad b-ball.
And the 3x3 b-ball games have been terrible. I watch the 3x3 b-ball just for laughs, because I think I’ve seen better pick-up ball at my local Sunday games.
Some sports have been unwatchable such as skateboarding, dressage, archery, air rifle and fencing. I watched two fencing matches with Americans. One was an ND student named Itkin who won his match. He’s very animated. The other American named Massialas, ranked #5 in the world, lost to a German, ranked #55 in the world.
The Japan vs. USA softball game was a very good game to watch. Team USA won 2-1 on a walk-off HR. They’ll play again for the Gold medal.
Swimming and rowing are OK. I watched an 18-year old named Kumar play ping pong, which was very interesting. I love watching badminton, weightlifting and judo, but NBC hasn’t shown much of those sports.
After just having watched the Tour De France finish up, I’ve had my fill of cycling and Olympic cycling seems like after thought for me.
I’ll continue to watch this week and hopefully track and field will much better next week.
We have Hulu that includes live tv. We’ve been watching the Olympics on that this time around. H gets up really early so he sometimes watches the live coverage that’s on at 5 AM. I don’t get up that early so any Olympics I watch is usually the prime time coverage in the evening or if H does watch something during the day I may watch a little too. We aren’t big watch tv during the day type people though. We did see a bit of the surfing and skateboarding which was interesting, since they’re new to the Olympics. And we also saw some of the table tennis and weightlifting, which I don’t think I’ve ever seen before, so that was interesting, though we only watched about 15 mins of each, since it gets a little boring after a while.
We’ve seen a LOT of swimming which is exciting but it does kind of blend together and get repetitive after a while. I feel the same about track and field. Though, I will say both are fun to watch for a little while and I like to keep them on as background noise. I did enjoy seeing Katie Ledecky go up against Titmus from Australia. Very fun! I also enjoyed seeing Adam Peaty from Great Britain win another gold! We enjoyed watching him in Rio, so it’ll be neat to see how he does in Tokyo!
D and I have enjoyed watching the gymnastics and we wish they showed more of the competition and more gymnasts from different countries instead of just 98% US and a bit of Russia and China, but then again we love gymnastics so that’s probably why we feel that way. It’s still fun to watch though and we can’t wait to see the competition for medals.
I hope we get to see some diving. I’ve enjoyed watching that in previous Olympics.
S is looking forward to the BMX cycling. And he watched some of the mountain biking, which he’d never seen before, and he said it was pretty fun to watch! It was on super late last night, so H and I didn’t see it. Maybe they’ll show it during the day or we can find a replay somewhere. My co-worker and her husband are big mountain bikers and they like to watch the mountain biking and they’ve told me it’s worth a watch at least once…
We also watched the men’s triathlon Sunday evening which was interesting. Good for the Norwegian who won, he looked so happy!
I was getting my car fixed at our local dealership this morning and they had the Olympics on on the tv in the waiting room. I got to see part of a water polo match. Only got to see 5 mins before H picked me up though. Still great to see a little bit!
Anyone else interested in the sport climbing? I’ve never seen competitive climbing before… I’ll be interested to see how that plays out.
I agree. Years ago you’d see the gymnasts from many other countries as well.
I have been watching the raw live coverage on the internet Olympic Live Streams, TV Listings & Schedule | NBC Olympics and enjoying them. Only thing is that they are on Japan time and so I can only do this late at night. Looks like Peacock will catch up with replays about 48 hours after the original programming - but I am not sure they will include the same raw coverage.
I watched the Mixed Doubles Table Tennis match between Japan and China which was incredibly entertaining.
Raw coverage is what I prefer - when they show as much as they can and don’t just concentrate on Americans.
Had a tea break and watched the final minutes of that, too! Very entertaining.
Just watched Flora Duffy win the gold for Bermuda in the women’s triathlon. My H is Bermudian and we have our flag out and are so excited. First Olympic gold medal ever for Bermuda!
I just watched Flora win too. Very exciting. I’ve been to Bermuda 3 times and think it’s beautiful!
I don’t understand synchronized diving, but I’m happy for the winners
We watched mountain biking today- it looked brutal. Someone went off a rock wrong, crashed and still went on. Enjoyed watching the skeet shooting today. Happy for Tom Daley to finally win. Also happy Bermuda won their first Gold ever.
Watched the Russian gymnast perform his routines just three months after a torn Achilles - wow, just wow. He did great considering that he probably had zero to no practice in those months. If this was my son, I would have killed him for doing this!
Katie Ledecky is a beast. She swam 2100 meters at Olympic speed in less than half a day: 400 final and 200 and 1500 prelims. Beast mode!
Actually, in a NPR report today, they said he started training right after his surgery! Amazing performance!!
