Tolerance for Conservatives

I realize I am posting a lot, this is due to two things 1) I am currently wired on caffeine 2) Curiosity is stronger at 12 in the morning

Will you be murdered if you express yourself as a conservative to some extent, I dont mean that literally, but after reading about some of the other posters experiences, I just wanted more information on what the school would be like for paleocons like myself

you wont be ridiculed or anything, but most people will try to prove your views wrong and you will be confronted with liberal ideas all day. i personally think berk is a great place for conservatives to come and challenge their ideas (they will most likely be proved wrong though because conservative ideology is just nonsense)

well it depends do you refer to neocons and all of their associated ********, or my variety of paleoconservativism? One ideology has more common sense than the other.

You'll survive there. Liberalism is obviously dominant there, but I've seen Republican clubs on campus before. You'll just meet many more liberals.

Thats the sense I got, I was merely worried about excessive hostility

the thing is,....the conservatives on campus are one group: BCR, there's them, maybe the jehova's witnesses and....the xtians or anti-abortion people. So that makes them well organized.
leftist/progressive/liberal groups....there's a gabillion, the cal dems, the socialists, the communists, propalestine, greens, democracy matters and w/e. Either way, it's all about questioning.

Many Berkeley students never miss the opportunity to belittle conservative ideology. Either conform to democratic socialism or prepare for verbal dehumanization.

that sounds more like national socialism

only kidding!

economic nationalism would be a better description

I was worried about the same thing, but for UCD or UCSC isntead...

My cousin who goes to UCB told me that people "look at republicans" differently... I think she was just joking. Anyhow, aren't liberals supposedly self-labeled "people of tolerance?" Sounds like tolerance for only the ridiculous ideologies they believe in.

Gimme a break. It's a college campus, there's a reason why people tend to not be conservative. college is about hope and idealism, conservatism tends to be about turning back the clock.
"liberalism" on college campuses (one of the bastions of revolutionary thought being Berkeley) ended a war, fought mccarthyism, and led the civil rights movement. It's changed the way America thinks, from accepting fashioned thought, to questioning the very fabric of our society. So stop griping, come out and challenge whatever thought you disagree with.
If anything, there's not enough outrage on campus, with all the lies we've been told recently, Sproul Plaza should be on fire every day.
Berkeley students tend to think globally, and that's the way colleges should be, GLOBAL institutions. We're not Americans, we're human beings.

^^totally true

I dunno, Berkeley doesn't seem all that liberal. I suppose the predominant ideology leans towards the left but there are a ton of Christians here, some liberal, some conservative. Most people don't seem to really care. It's not something I see brought up very often.

the christians are the predominantly the asian christians. and they're really good at tricking you with free bbq. they're harmless though, not that political.
but generally vicissitudes, yah, there's alot of apathy, especially amongs the sciency engineering types, the asian population is particularly apolitical, and business folks (libertarians and such).
The humanities social science people like me are destined to live a life of fighting for some glorious crusade and lost cause, and probably starving. but hey, those are the ones worth fighting.

There is a large bloc of faux liberals at Cal who are really centrists or moderate conservatives who love to belittle in jest with the authentic leftists. It's great.

Also, Asians (particularly business majors) tend to be conservative because of their neoliberal economic leanings.

punkdude

how does being pro-palestine...make a person liberal??

my bad, you're right propalestine people aren't necessiarily liberal, they can be entirely short sighted. But they're definately not conservatives or moderates, seeing as how mostly the propalestine people are the ISO or single issue arab groups.

they're definately not conservatives or moderates

Not so sure. It's my understand that some conservative Jews at Berkeley are propalestine.

Berkeley is a lot more fun if you are a conservative. It is kinda like watching comedy central all day. You get to laugh at people non-stop, everyday. Don't pick a different school because you are conservative too. You would simply be missing out.
