how do you approach tone or author's attitude questions on the CR? do you just read the whole thing and get a "feel" for the tone.. or is there actually textual evidence (like the other questions) that would lead to the correct answer? i never know where to look since they don't give you line numbers and once you hit the tone questions the questions dont follow the order of the passage

if you have been in AP english, or IB english, you know all about tone. if not, there are some ways to figure it out. generally if you are reading and you see a certain set of descriptive diction (word choice) which is pervasive through the whole passage then it probably is the tone, for instance if you start seeing very dark imagery and cacophonous words, you can be sure the author is bitter or maybe vindictive, but whatever it is, it would be "negative"

often the tone might be more subtle, like a sarcastic passage. you need to watch out for this, so if the passage seems almost too "straight-forward" or you are missing some of the allusions or analogies, then it could be satirical.

i usually can get a "feel" for tone, but there are in many cases many textual examples to demonstrate tone...so if you are doubting yourself, try to find a couple examples in the passage that support your choice.

i have a great list of some basic tone words which i have used for the past couple years in school when i needed a quick tone word, which you should know the meanings of to most of the words by now...if not, it's good review for the critical reading because these are all common literary words...

Edit: hahaha it put wis.t.ful as a curse word because of s.t.f.u....lol
