The Tony Awards are tonight. I'll be tuning in. Since there are lots of theater lovers on this forum, I figured I would start a thread for anyone who wants to discuss the nominees, the show/telecast, the live production numbers, the award winners, the dresses (!), etc. Here we go!

I’m excited! I’m the theater editor at the school paper, and I’m interning in NY this summer, so I’m going whole hog on Tony coverage. There’s a broadcast in Times Square where they show everything, including the stuff that doesn’t air, so that should be really cool to go to!

playbill is also doing a lot of coverage with live blog, facebook, and twitter posts.

Tony excitement - when D and other American Theater Wing / Springboard attendees (30 plus students from colleges all over the USA) attended the dress rehearsal for the Tonys this morning! Neil Patrick Harris hilarious I hear - and they saw all the musical numbers in last rehearsal for this evening. It was a thrill for them. For rising seniors and juniors just want to say - this is a phenomenal program and opportunity in NYC in the summer! The kids see many Tony nominated plays, work with major talents and get to know what it will be like living in NYC - just a great experience. and the folks who run Springboard are wonderful.

Looking forward to it! I don’t know a lot about all of the plays and technical achievements, but love watching it all. And we will be cheering on our Chicago theatre veteran, Jessie Mueller!

I sure hope Ghost gets either Best Scenic Design or Best Lighting Design…not sure which it should be. I think they need a new category: Best Special Effects!

Best Fake Baby in a Musical: Porgy and Bess.

I think one relevant thing to this forum is how in many of the acceptance speeches at the Tonys tonight, recipients thanked their family, and often their parents (including those who have passed away) for their support in believing in them, etc. For those who support their loved ones in the arts, it matters.

I was shocked to realize this was Alan Menken’s first Tony win! Apparently I had mentally transformed some of those Oscars into Tonys over the years. ;-D

Very happy that “Once” was the big winner. Love the soundtrack and the movie. I bought my sons tickets to see this show and JCS this summer.

I was giggling at the skinny-minny Tracy Turnblad…

I’m about to explode with pride about “Once” and die from frustration that I can’t afford to just jet out to NY and see it. One of my daughter’s MTCA coaches is in it and for a backwater hick like me it just never ceases to thrill me when someone I know has a huge win like this. It’s just so gratifying! And having gotten to know Anne from my D’s coaching sessions I can tell you she so deserves this. I’m so happy!!!

It is an amazing show. We saw it at the NY Theater Workshop before it hit Broadway and my jay dropped for the full evening! Now trying to figure out if I want to spend the $$$ to see it again when I return her to school in September!

I’d love to see Once also. My daughter saw it when it was Off Broadway, for free no less. She raved about it.

I thought there would be way more buzz on the forum here last night and today with the Tonys in this crowd.

Now, the least important to discuss but still fun…the ladies’ dresses. I am sure I have missed many of them but here are some of my faves and least faves.

Faves:
Bernadette Peters…truly a pretty diva dress which she is (in terms of stardom)
Audra MacDonald…simple dress but she looked so pretty (on top of sounded amazing)
Judy Kaye…a very pretty dress for an older fuller figured woman
Laura Osnes…figure and looks pulled it off
Judith Light…very pretty on her and nice style for an older woman
Elizabeth Davis…unusual dress but very lovely on her and she pulled it off

Least Faves:
Hugh Jackman’s wife…her shoes…no, no, no with that dress!
Amanda Seyfried…the dress would have been much better without the big red belt and the very bright red lipstick…which were too much for the purple busy dress
Laura Bell Bundy…looked like a prom dress and was cut very deeply in front
Candace Bergen…besides not looking well, her hair and outfit just were off the mark

How 'bout you guys?

Really Godspell, Hairspray where is the talent?

^^Soozie, I’m with you on the dresses that I noticed–B. Peters and A. McDonald looked great, C. Bergen looked ill-at-ease and ill-dressed, and Hugh Jackman’s wife…hair, dress, etc., were not a good fit for the event, let’s say. Definitely noticed makeup more than clothes–I was dismayed by the abundance of bright-red clownish lipstick and wondered if that was just for the benefit of t.v. cameras or if people really think that looks good!

Snapdragonfly - Anne was also my D’s coach - so proud of and happy for her. I really enjoyed the opening number as my husband is not a lover of musical theater. NPH lovingly mocked the whole breaking into song and dance thing that my husband always complains about.

I saw Godspell and there was so much energy… that was really lacking in the Tony performance. Loved, loved, loved Once and thought the performance did it justice. Wished JCSS performed a different song but I guess they wanted to highlight Josh Young who was nominated.

Well totally agree on Hugh Jackman’s wife’s shoes!! Just terrible. But I believe Candace Bergen has had a stroke at some point not that this should allow her to go on stage like this. I do agree she at least could have had her hair done. And I am so ecstatic for the cast of Once!!! I saw it a few weeks ago and it was fabulous!! A must see!!!
