i think it was kind of a given that sutton foster would not win (considering the show had closed and victoria clark was an obvious favorite) i thot the tonys this year were really predictable and basically all the favorites won. the little snippets of each show were wonderful and i really wanna see 25th annual putnam and light in the piazza now =P

yeah i agree that it was really predictable...which makes it weird since last year the predictions were completely off....i liked the snipets of the musicals as well

but i wanted to scream when hugh started singing "somewhere" from west side story after seeing a commercial playing that song like 5 times over the course of the ceremony!!!!!!!

Mary Louise Parker got robbed! ;) Naw ... From what they showed, Cherry Jones seemed amazing. Spamalot looked like a riot, too. I love Monty Python.

thesbo, as much as I love MLP, Cherry Jones was truly deserving of the win this year. She seemed sincerely happy and it was cute to see her gushing over her new (and very young!) girlfriend.

I think it was less predictable than everyone was saying. I did manage to predict the majority of the awartds; however, the fact that Spamalot only won 3 awards, and Light in the Piazza won far more. I think it is a shame that Dirty Rotten Scoundrels won only one, but what can you do. I bought a copy of the script to Doubt at Borders earlier in the day since I figured it would win. I would recommend everyone who can't see the show to at least pick up the script. It goes without saying to pick up the cast recordings from the musical nominees.

hehe hooraaay vicki clark! love love love her. i wish that piazza had a cooler group song than statues and stories tho, it's not the most entertaining, moving, or interesting number in the show by any means...that's alright though - hooray for norbert as well! seattle had their own version of the tony awards for high schools in the state of washington tonight - the 5th avenue theatre awards. they were very fun! not nearly as predictable as the real tonys, i must say...

haha last night must have been a designated night for high school award ceremonies as there was one here last night too! My school doesn't participate in them because I go to private school, but I had several friends who were nominated....it seemed cool!

Our school, region, nor state have any drama type "Tony Awards" but I have heard of states or areas or schools who do and it sounds very cool. One of the interesting things for me on CC, is learning how things go all around the country.

our state has a "tony award" like thing called "ariZoni awards" or Zonis for short. they have youth categories and adult categories and they perform scenes at the awards ceremonies just like the tonys. ive heard its really professional-like and a lot of fun.

Awww, the Zonis is a cute name!!
Anyone else from Pittsburgh?
We have the annual Gene Kelly Awards for high schools in the Pittsburgh areahttp://www.pittsburghclo.org/outreach/gene_kelly.cfm, and I can't say enough wonderful things about them. First of all, a brief montage of the late, great, Gene Kelly himself is played at the beginning of the show, and the night is all in the spirit of Gene Kelly's love for musical theater. His widow, Patricia Kelly, flies in every year and meets many students. It follows the formal of the Tony's, complete with Pittsburgh celebrity presenters, scenes from the high schools nominated for best musical, and acceptance speeches by the winners (something that is really cool is that students accept all the awards, even 'Best Director'--it's usually the student director). Usually, almost all of the participating schools (28 this year) get nominations. Unfortunately, my high school didn't get nominated this year--but we still attended, and had two student performers in the finale. Two students from every school, regardless of nominations, perform, in costumes from the show they were in, in the finale number, "Eyes on the Goal." My sister was fortunate enough to be able to perform last weekend (they were held on Saturday, June 4). The Kelly Awards are staged at the Benedum, the home of the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, so it was an amazing opportunity for my sister to perform on the Benedum stage, with so many talented peers. She even got to use a mic even though her solo was only 1 line. It's just a fun night all in all--everyone is supporting each other and enjoying how great the other schools' shows are. There are three budget categories and three shows are nominated for best musical in each one, so you get to see a total of 9 scenes from 9 different high schools, which is always really neat. I'm back at Case Western (where I am a student) for summer classes, so I couldn't attend this year, but it's definitely a tradition my family and I look forward to every year!
