Tony Trivia

D and I had a fun night watching the Tony’s last night! We love to see the different performers we have seen in shows and look at all the lovly dresses! I agree with you about Kristin’s dress - not our favorite either.

We also liked how they had the cast of Memphis sing the final song. Memphis was not one of our favorite shows, but we do love to hear La Jolla Playhouse (right up the street from us) get kudos.

My D can hardly wait to get to NYC for school as she is so excited to see Bernadette Peters playing Desiree Armfeldt and Elaine Stritch as Madam Armfeldt!

I was disappointed in general with the Tonys last night, for reasons you’ve all already articulated.

But I’ve been wondering, is singing taken into account for the best actor/actress award? I know it’s best actor in a MUSICAL, but it’s also best ACTOR in a musical, not best actor/singer in a musical.

No only has star power has taken over the TONY’s, it has become a popularity contest. There were so many brilliant Broadway performers passed over last night. Next year it will be DVR and speed through the awards like they are commercials so I can watch the performances.

beentheredad, it’s nothing new. It’s unlikely that you’d find a year in the past 25-30, probably even longer, where there are no nominees who are better known for their tv/film work, in the acting categories. While there are performances overlooked every year, I don’t think that this year was particularly egregious in that regard. I honestly don’t think that there were an abundance of brilliant performances this year, and I saw just about everything in this season. The fact that Douglas Hodge, Viola Davis , Katie Finneran, Levi Kreis, and Eddie Redmayne won is proof that not only the big name stars win.

I was so disappointed in the poor sound and failing mics, and thought the production numbers were more loud than anything else. Overall, I was unimpressed with the whole show save for a few choice moments. It was great to hear Katie Finneran tell all the kids watching to go for their dreams. I thought CZJ was terrible, terrible, terrible. She reminded me of Joan Crawford with her eyes and head movements. And I really thought her acceptance speech was a little contrived. But how about a shout out to Sean Hayes. I thought he was pretty good as the MC.

lesmizmom, I totally agree with your last post. Furthermore, I have no desire to see any of the shows featured. Usually they sell me better than that. lol

I saw A Little Night Music twice and both times I saw it CZJ was outstanding and didn’t do the weird head-jerky things. Maybe she couldn’t hear or something cause she’s sick? I don’t know, but I thought they should have done Weekend in the Country to showcase all the wonderful talent they have in that show…

I can’t believe the sound was messed up again this year, after all the problems they had lst year. The worst moment of the night for me was when Denzel said something like “Why do you guys call it the Tonys?” ughhhhhh
Also, the Glee thing was unnecessary. And that’s coming from someone who LOVES glee. That was just awful.
Last years Tony’s made me cry they were so good- this year, not so much :frowning: Sean Hayes was super cute, though!

We saw “Fences” last night and it just might be the best play I’ve ever seen in 40 years of seeing Broadway shows. The acting was phenomenal, the material was so rich, the set amazing, I just can’t say enough. Oh, and with the top price of a ticket being close to $400 it was absolutely sold out.

I know it’s closing soon but if you can get to see it - even if you have to buy single tickets for each person going (sometimes single tickets are easier to get), you should go.

Recently went with the family to see Memphis in it loved by everyone. Great story, great acting, extremely funny, fantastic singing and dancing.

amtc- when is Fences closing? I’ll be in new york the second weekend of july, I hope I’m not missing it.

July 11th which is the second weekend of July! See what’s available for tickets, there’s really no bad seat as it’s a small theatre but very vertical, as I said, even if you can’t sit together it’s very worth it.

Last weekend I saw several shows in NYC, among them, Promises, Promises and A Little Night Music. All of the famous stars were great. Catherine Z-J may have still been a little sick, though, but still did well and was beautiful!

CZJ and Kathie Lee Gifford have to be the two most annoying women on the planet.
