Too big of a laptop?

I'm trying to decide whether to get a 17-inch or 15.4-inch macbook pro. Does anyone (maybe from experience) know if a 17-inch might be too large to be carried around for everyday use on campus? Any input would be really appreciated.

17 inch notebooks are typically at at least 7 pounds.

It doesn't sound much, but lugging that thing around will make it feel like it's weighing 10 pounds, then 15 pounds, as you keep carrying and carrying it.

I've seen some gigantic laptops go up to 13 pounds (kinda ridiculous, isn't it?)

I've never carried a 17" around campus... but I've carried it around getting from one place to another... it gets heavy.

Oh, and I'm not exactly a weak person either...

I think any 17 incher is a bit large because it hinders mobility. For all you multimedia fanatics.... that's why we have 15 inch widescreens :)

I'd stick with the 15 incher (I'm personally getting a 12 inch widescreen).

The 17-incher is 6.8 pounds I believe. Honestly, it's not much heavier than the 15" (5.6 lbs.). If it were me, I'd get the 15-inch just because 17 inches of screen isn't really necessary.

Also, you probably won't carry your laptop around as much as you think. Still, I like portable (or at least semi-portable) laptops, so 15" would be better for me. It really is personal preference, but the bottom line is that the 17" wouldn't be too big to carry around if you chose it.

You can max out the 15" MacBook Pro to the same specs as the 17" MacBook Pro and it will be the same price. If you max out the memory and keep the same Hard Drive , it will be the same price as the 17" MBP and you gain a lot with having 2 gigs of ram.

Maxisyahu, you can customize it to be similar, but the 15-inch still lacks some of the 17-inch's qualities, such as a 8x Superdrive and another firewire port. Anyway, thanks for your comments everyone; I'm getting the 15-inch.

True, but I mean an 8x SuperDrive is it really that useful and also you get Firewire 800 Port? Good choice in getting the 15" , it's an awesome machine

I have a 17 inch widescreen. It's one sweet machine for games, movies, etc. But if you don't do too much of that stuff then you are better off with a 15.

The 15'' is still good for games, movies, etc. It's just smaller. The 17'' just would've been too bulky for me to carry around all day especially since I plan to take notes with it.

don't plan on taking notes with your computer...especially if you're in math/science/engineering or anything else where it's not an almost exclusively alphanumeric, word-based lecture...
