Ok let me give you a little insight into my background. I am a 18 yr old Vietnamese female who was adopted at the age of 6 months by my same-sex adoptive fathers. I have lived in NYC all my life and am currently in a top private day-school.

Ok, now that we have the initial introduction out of the way, lets get down to business. Basically what I am considering is basing my college application essay around this topic- growing up with two gay parents, its impact on me and my perception of life/humanity, my relationship with others and my community's relationship with my family.

I know I can write a truly brilliant essay and I have been encouraged my both my parents and my GC to embrace this challenge with open arms. But I am still a bit hesitant as I am not too sure how my prospective colleges (particularly the older ones such as Yale, Harvard and Princeton) will respond to such a topic and maybe it is still a tad too controversial. Any opinions?

I think it would be a great topic, and no, it's not too controversial. In fact, there's an essay somewhere on ********* about being gay. It is brilliantly written, and the applicant was accepted to Harvard (if I remember correctly).

CorruptedMorals, do you really want to go to a school that isn't welcoming of such a topic? How welcoming then would they be of you and your parents?

And don't worry about Harvard; it's not too controversial for them - remember, it's in Cambridge, and Massachusetts is the only state in the union that has legalized gay marriage.

The college essay imo should be personal, not political.

So, if your essay is going to center on your own personal experiences and background, I think it can be terrific (and not a problem for most colleges). On the other hand, though, I would not recommend writing a "position paper", a political essay, on the issue of same-sex marriage.

Thanks! I really appreciate your advise! Don't worry my essay is from a personal perspective and how I have grown and been affected by these specific conditions. If anyone knows where I can find that essay mentioned above I would really appreciate it :)

okay first of all holy crap i'm jealous of your background, i think you will get in anywhere. also i have this admissions book written by someone with a phd who does admissions for brown, and her number one favorite essay was about someone's struggle with being homosexual in an unaccepting world. unless you're applying to christian school, i think most places are looking to increase diversity and openmindedness. good luck!
