Too dumb for college

Okay it seems to me around here people must be geniuses, so I guess I have a low chance of getting into any good school, even though i have mostly B grades and one or two A's. Since i am still a Junior I haven't taken my Sat yet. If you had to base on my transcript my chances of getting into Penn State, Syracuse Uni (which is in my home state), Pittsburgh Uni, StonyBrook (also home state) and Hoftra, my backup school is Long Island University and City College Of New York, i far exceed their requirements based on grades.

any I want to go to Penn State as my first choice, what other university's do you suggest I don't want any community colleges.

Depending on your major I would say you have a good shot at most state colleges… for example FSU, Arizona state(which is a great school to study at if you want to become a social worker, etc),

I’d say Penn is somewhat of a match, but I have no test scores or ECs to consider, which as you know can sway your “verdict”.

I’d say you’re a match for all schools you mentioned, but maybe a reach for Stony Brook and Syracuse. But hey, my GPA is almost the same as yours( freshman in college) and I know whole fraternities with lower average GPA’s than both of us! So you’re “average” GPA is fine. Not everybody can be “SuperGeek” and get all A’s… and some smart kids might just be underachievers or go to a shi*** school  Luckily colleges know this, and their opinions are the ones that matter… not what a bunch of 17-18 yr olds with no life experience tell you :)

If you mean Florida State University the latest class of freshmen admitted had this range of scores:

See: [About FSU’s Students](Students | Florida State University)

yeah I meant florida state… and all those stats really mean is that 50% had a higher GPA, and the other half had less  Just because you have under a 3.5 doesn’t mean you won’t get in… BTW… I wouldn’t believe all those stats either as they vary from site to site and some colleges add a 0.1 to seem more attractive to students…

Anyway as I stated earlier it’s not just the GPA that matters, SAT/ACT scores, ECs as well as other factors are also evaluated, and we can only guess :)

FSU reports a weighted GPA. +1 for AP/IB and +0.5 for any other non-standard course (honors/pre-IB/pre-AP/gifted/accelerated/etc.

Using that scale, a 3.7 is really not very impressive. A standard student with 3 AP classes and half of their remaining classes as honors would recalculate that GPA to a 3.1. The local high school here uses the same weighting system, and the Valedictorian graduated with a 5.5 GPA. Top 50% was around 3.7.

FSU is just playing with the numbers.

I don’t mean to sound rude but in your freshman year you said that history was your strong subject. So how come you have a 77 in AP US History?

@NiteStriker

The teacher thought my essays were to vague so she would rate them low, essays were a major part of tests in the class. I’m a great essay writer that’s why my english grade went up. So I’m guessin she’s a very tough essay grader.

EC’s

Business School - Teaches youth about the business world and how to network, act in a professional manner and all that stuff I will get a paid internship this summer.

Latin Dance - teaches you to dance to Latin music you learn to dance Salsa, Batchata etc, I also performed for school assemblies.

Campus Ministry - A community service group.

I plan to take the Sat and th SAT II on World History and Us History since I’m taking Ap Us History also, would it make me more commpetative to show all three test on my application.

so does my EC mean anything at all?

Hm, assuming leadership roles in your ECs would be even better, or school clubs. You are a good candidate for a lot of state schools though!

This method is pretty much consistent across the Florida SUS. It works for Florida and given the numbers of graduates from the SUS in a state of some 18 million, I’d say it is reasonable.

The problem is that above, you used the GPA to tout the difficult admissions of FSU when another poster compared it to ASU. Since other schools are using unweighted GPAs in their comparison, and FSU artificially inflates their admissions statistically (severely), your assertion is incorrect.

I calculate a 2.9 GPA for the OP, which isn’t far off FSU’s unweighted.

Unless the OP is a Florida resident he/she will be held to higher OOS standards and is unlikely to gain admission with a 2.9/4.0 at FSU. Even as a Florida resident admission is not at all certain with that GPA, since the average enrolled GPA for FSU’s FTIC is 3.72/4.0 per the latest available CDS.

A student presenting ~2.9/4.0 GPA represents 1.8% of the enrolled freshmen at FSU per the CDS for Fall 2008.

Florida State weighs GPA and course rigor more heavily than SAT or ACT scores, so even a very high SAT/ACT score would only be of limited help to a student carrying a 2.9/4.0 GPA.

What the OP could do, if their heart were set on Florida State, would be apply for Summer session when the standards are slightly relaxed. If that does not work then attending TCC and transferring to FSU is another option.

Penn State-reach
Syracuse Uni (which is in my home state)-im guessing match/low reach
Pittsburgh Uni-not sure sorry
StonyBrook (also home state)-good chance
Hoftra-match
good luck!!
