Pickup between 4 & 5:30. Will definitely report back!
I got the app, there are several places by me (2 - 5 miles), bagel stores, delis, pizzarias, even a gyro/jerk store.
It’s better than a lottery ticket!!
I think it’s a great concept for whoever wants to partake. Another way to encourage less waste. An option for those on a budget or for those who just like to mix things up, score a good buy, take a chance, etc.
It isn’t about what you can afford. It’s about an alternative community method that promotes reducing food waste, probably helps local restaurants out a bit, makes for creative cooking/eating, etc.
Friend in NYC does it regularly. It’s really YMMV. Make sure the establishment has at least a 4.5 rating, she says. I am picky about what I eat, so I may not find anything I want to eat in the $5 bag.
Just signed up - there’s a Peets nearby that’s sold out for today. Options were pastry for $3.99 and whole bean coffee for $5.67. I’ll keep an eye out and try it sometime. Other options are further away than worth going; also coffee related.
When you click on one of the stores, it will tell you it they were sold out for the day, and what time the bags will be ready to reserve for the next day. In my case, it had said yesterday reservations would be open at 6:18 pm. I clicked on it exactly then. The notice then said “sold out at 6:18”. The manager told me today when I picked up that they only have 1 or 2 bags a day, so it will be important to do it at the exact time that they open for reservations to be able to get another, at that store at least.
I primarily walk or use public transportation here, so I only set my parameters to 1 mile. In that area, there are 3 local markets, 3 cafe/bakery type places, 1 pizza place and 3 Dominican restaurants. I’ll more than likely just stick with the markets, for now.
The Peet’s just says “Not available right now” with no indication when it will be available. So that function probably depends on the store.
I just signed up! Picking up from a Polish supermarket that recently opened about half a mile from my apartment.
Is it weird that I’m excited to find out what you all get?
I hope this catches on here. I’m with others who see this as $5 of fun with perhaps some nice surprises. If we had a good market participating in my area, I would plan an evening meal based on those surprise items… just to test our culinary creativity and make for an interesting and perhaps silly evening. Non-perishables we would not use could easily be donated to our local food pantry.
Maybe my life is too boring, but I really would give it a try and try to have fun with it.
Let us know what you got!
Assuming most of you are in larger cities?? San Diego, NYC, Chicago….?
I am telling ya… Bakeries are the best because… Who really cares what you get… Lol… I think sometimes some places use this for marketing. So you can sample their stuff then you will go to social media and talk about it. But for $5.00 you can’t go too wrong.
We used it once at the merchandise market in Chicago. There is a great place for salads. Their like over $10.00.We went on the site and yep they were on it. Since they were not busy and we were standing right there, they made up salads custom for us. It was fantastic…
I’m not in a city. I live in central Massachusetts. So it is a “tech connected“ region, but I’m actually not close to any cities.
I downloaded the app out of curiosity- put in a few urban areas in Ohio…no locations showed up! Yet.
None in CT either…at least not near enough to me.
We got our bag! I would say with mixed results.
The good: 5 interesting items (peppermint chocolate lava cake mix, bourbon maple pecans, apricot Matcha snack clusters, 2 plant based protein bars). The clusters and the pecans were a hit. We haven’t tried the cake mix or protein bars.
The bad: everything was very expired. Best by dates of last February, last April, and last July. I’m not worried about it, because we would eat something like that that was in our own pantry, but it does feel a little weird.
Verdict: would definitely try again when I’m looking for something to get myself out of the house.
In NJ 10 miles outside Manhattan, a lot of places are a couple of towns away, larger and wealthier, some of the stores are well regarded popular spots, very blue town so I suspect the emphasis on cutting down on waste is a factor in their participation.
Your things look yummy, not sure about the protein bars. I wouldn’t have any problems with those expiration dates either.
Too Good to Go is currently operational in a few markets within the US, including Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Portland (both Maine and Washington), Providence, San Franciso, Seattle and Washington DC .
I’ve worked in a food bank … those expiration dates are absolutely fine.
