I'm a high school junior with quite a list of extracurriculars already under my belt, and my question is this... am I too involved?

Student government officer
Yearbook editor
Theatre participant (various productions)
Colorguard member
National Honor Society
Mu Alpha Theta (math club)
Cappies (student theater critic program)
Swim team from grades 9-12

from past years I was also a Debate officer and a member of French Club.

I've heard that there's no such thing as being too involved but colleges are mostly looking for leadership positions? Like I said, I serve as an elected official (not president though) of the Junior Class and I have a good chance at becoming the Swimming Captain next year and have been told I will become Yearbook Editor-In-Chief next year as well. I also have had articles published in the Dallas Morning News. Are these good things, from a college's point of view? I am aiming for very selective colleges.

Do what you WANT to do, if you would participate in all those activities if you knew nothing of college, than stick with it!

To give a more definite answer, don't spread yourself out; make sure you accomplish something in those activities. If a college perceives that your EC selection was intended to impress them, than thats bad. I cant say how some college would evaluate you, but you dont seem to be just participating in these things, but actually making a contribution (good!). You seem to be very multitalented, just don't spread yourself thin, depth in a better breadth. But from what youve said, my guess would be youre fine :-)

Besides, what does college matter in the end anyway? :-P

"Besides, what does college matter in the end anyway?"
Funny that you ask that on a message board devoted to the college application process...

Let me tell you this. I am more involved that you are, and I squeeze time in to eat, shower, and sleep. However, I love every freaking second of it. Everything from cacner research while most of the lab has gone home, to having to BS english hmwk at 3am. But I choose "this way." AS long as you're happy spreading yourself so thin, do it, because when you're old, you'll say "wow, I wish I would have done more while me hip was still good."
