Too late for any options?

S is a freshman at a Catholic eastern school, studying engineering. He has not been happy with the restrictions on the social life at the school. He pledged a fraternity in the second semester but found that has really tanked his grades (first semester was a little under a 3.0, not great either). So, he decided to drop the fraternity and focus on grades, which is ok.

He wants to transfer. It is past the deadline for transfer applications at most schools. The one option we know he has, which is to return to California and attend community college for a year then seek to transfer to a UC, is not a very good one. For many complex reasons he would not do well at a commuter community college, whether he lived at home or somewhere else.

Is there any chance of applying and getting in with a late transfer application? What about to Tulane? He was admitted there last year with a scholarship (ooops, perhaps he should have taken it since we won't be getting it again). Additional complication, his senior year high school grades were not good, bad case of senioritis. Didn't matter for the school he went to but for transferring I am worried.

There are some health issues that can be used to explain, in part, his performance.

Any insights appreciated!

I failed to mention that S continues to be interested in engineering. Actually, civil engineering. Makes Tulane tough since they eliminated that major altogether a few years ago. So would like to maintain that major as a possibility

I could be mistaken, but I believe there are still numerous schools that still have Regular Decision deadlines that haven’t come about. (Although I believe all the Early Decision deadlines have passed.)

There are still schools out there! Some people have mentioned them on this thread, but the collegeboard shows transfer deadlines as well. Several schools (I think Wakeforest, among others) have rolling admissions and continue to accept transfer applications through the end of the semester.

Transfer deadlines are all over the place…I’ve seen them any time between March and June. Many colleges offer spring admissions too.

Where on college board are you finding transfer application deadlines? Is this inside each school’s information? Would be terrific to be able to filter to schools with rolling or later deadlines. Thanks!

If your son has found that he is not happy where he is then he needs to be the one doing something about it. If you do all the research then he has no way of gauging where he might be happier.

But, yes, many many colleges have late deadlines. I’ve seen May and June deadlines quite often.

nc state’s deadline is april 1

There are a lot of schools that have deadlines that haven’t passed yet. CWRU, a school I’m applying to for transfer, has a deadline for April or May (I forget).

And even if the deadlines for some schools have passed, sometimes they’ll still consider applicants if they have enough space for them, but scholarships might not be available by that point.

cwjthree - unfortunately there isn’t an option to filter by application deadlines :frowning: but if you search a school, there is a “deadlines” tab right under “at a glance”. there’s a subheading to transfer applications and dates as well.
