I'm finishing up my first year of college and I'm currently a computer science major. I did okay in my compSci courses (As & Bs) but I'm finding that computer science isn't for me.

I'm looking into changing to Mechanical Engineering because I feel it'll be a more hands-on experience rather than abstract and logic based like compSci.

I'm willing to hard hard for a degree in Mechanical Engineering. I do fairly well in math (Calculus level). I just haven't taken the physics courses yet but physics didn't both me too much in high school.

What I'm worried about is that it's too late for me to switch now since I'll be starting my second year. Should I be worried? What can be look forward to being a Mechanical Engineering major?

Within your first two years its relatively easy to switch between engineering majors without doing any real harm to yourself. And you should note that while, once in the field you will probably have a lot of hands-on work, your education might not reflect that. You’ll have to learn a lot a physics, fluid mechanics and other such things. Best thing you can do is speak with your school’s major or student advisors and ask them about the mechanical engineering courses first.

Check with an advisor in mechanical engineering, but it is probably still early enough to make this switch without prolonging your college stay. No one can really say any more without actually knowing the requirements of both programs and what courses you have completed.

The requirements for changing into Mechanical Engineering at my school is a 2.5 GPA or high in the following courses:

Math 2A, 2B, 2D
Physics 7A, 7B + lab, 7C + lab

I’ve already finished Math 2A and 2B which are the single variable calculus courses.

Back in my day, I would say as long as you as within your first 2 years, switching between engineering programs was no trouble. I am hearing now that some schools have “set limits” on the number of students within a certain engineering major, so you may need to verify this before switching majors.

Very true - I forgot about the enrollment cap issue. It varies from school to school, but this could definitely be a problem. At PSU, entrance into ME is at the end of the 3rd semester, and if you do not qualify at that point you do NOT get any more chances.

My school actually accepts changes into the engineering majors throughout the year. I suppose I’m just afraid of failure?

But everyone says that hard work will get me through.
