Too Late for Likely Letter?

Hello, I recently applied to an ivy league school and the coach assured me that he would request a likely letter. It has now been over a month and the official decisions results will be coming out soon, yet neither I nor the other recruits for my sport have heard anything about a likely letter. Should we be worried? What happens if the likely letter committee doesn’t have time to review an athletes application?

Have you reached out to your coach? If s/he doesn’t know, they can check in with admissions.

I can’t definitively answer your questions, but sometimes the likely letter committee doesn’t get thru all applications by the time ED/SCEA decisions are due. On the other hand, sometimes recruited athletes do not make it thru the likely letter committee meeting…but that is atypical, and if the app doesn’t go forward it’s for a good reason, e.g., poor Q1 grades, disciplinary issues, etc.

OK, my D never applied to IVY only D3, but I think it is late in the game for admissions LL with ED results just a few weeks away,. Someone will correct me if I am wrong. Call the coach to get clarification.

I’ve heard of athletes getting likely letters in Dec but I think it’s going to depend on the school and program. A month is long enough that I’d check in with the coach. “Any sense of when likely letter decisions will be communicated for my round of applicants?” or similar.

Most Ivy schools will have several Likely Letter adcom meetings. The first one usually is held during the last week in Sept and the first announcement of LL sent out on Oct 1. There will be several more LL meetings in Oct and Nov, and typically the letters will be sent out one week after the meeting. Your coach should be very familiar with the LL timeline and when the student athlete should receive one. He may be able to find out from the adcom if they decided not to give a LL to a particular athlete.

@helpwithchoice so did you ever get the LL, or better yet admitted?

@ShanFerg3 I never got the likely letter but coach called about a week before results were released and told me that admissions gave him the thumbs up. Ended up getting in! Thanks!

Congratulations!!!

@helpwithchoice congratulations and thanks for sharing your experience!
