Too late for Scholars?

On my common app I indicated that I would like to be considered for the scholars program however I just realized that we had the option of uploading a statement on solar. Will it hurt me that I have not made a statement? Also is it too late for me to upload a statement? I appreciate any help!

it’s probably too late since the deadline had pass like 3 weeks ago. i did scholar as well but IDK if it’s the scholar thing that slows down my app I applied early dec and still haven’t gotten a decision…

Yes, that deadline has passed. Those decisions are already being made.

@sbuadmissions‌ chris, if we haven’t heard about scholars by now does that mean son was not accepted? Don’t see anything in solar tho not exactly sure where we’d see it there and nothing via email so far.

@sbuadmissions‌ Have any waitlists been sent out yet?

Does Scholars refer to University Scholars? I indicated interest in it as well on my Common app. I had no idea that we had to upload something on solar :(.

I got an FA notification from stony today telling me that Im eligible for 6k a year… but no mention of THe univ scholars yet. Are we supposed to get an email? Or do I just assume I havent gotten in.

Also, what do you guys know about the Stem incentive program?

It seems liek a sure-fire way to pay for stony as it guarantees full tuition. Will I be able to use the 6k from stony and FAfsa/tap towards housing and books?

@Sapphire50‌ - University Scholars decisions are NOT out yet; probably later this week. Honors College and WISE are on their way.

@connetquotreppin‌ - Waitlist letters won’t go out until the end of March.

@ggwpafk823‌ - The NYS STEM incentive is a very good one, but it has some potential major pitfalls that you want to be very aware of before you confirm. First – you can’t change your major. If you do, out of a STEM field, then the grant changes to a loan. Not insurmountable, but then it’s not free money any more. Second – you need to work in a STEM field in NYS after graduation, or it again changes to a loan. Again, not insurmountable, but it does limit your potential future plans.

Just make sure you read everything before you sign on that.

@sbuadmissions‌ I see. If I sent my midyear grades, how long does it take to process? I was advised to send them by my counselor even though SOLAR didn’t require them. Will it hurt my chances?

Do Scholars for Medicine decisions come out at the same time as University Scholars?

Thanks very much, Chris!

Could I also ask if I can use any merit scholarship I receive from SBU to pay for room and board, or perhaps as a stipend for books, given that I cover tuition through a program similar to the STEM incentive one?

Sending your midyear grades only hurt if they aren’t very good.

SfMed/SfDentalMed decisions are made by the med/dental school. The Honors College and WISE send a small handful of applicants over for consideration (typically 30-40 out of the pool of over a thousand) and the med/dental schools then decide who they want to interview.

@ggwpafk823‌ - That’s a financial aid question; my instinct says yes, but I don’t know that. Call them directly at 631-632-6840.

Chris

@sbuadmissions‌ How many people tend to be interviewed for Engineering Scholars for Medicine, and how many are usually accepted?

ESfM and SfM together interview about 20, I believe. Total offer of no more than ten between the two programs.
