OK, I wasn't planning on applying to University of Chicago at all. Then I started looking around this forum and visited the UC website, which settled it. Any school with a website and essay prompts that quirky has my heart. I have the next two weeks to apply but my real problem is that my change of mind occured after break started and I won't see my teachers or my counselor until Jan. 3rd. One teacher I am almost sure I can contact by email, but not the other two. Is applying out of the question for me or are the deadlines more lenient than they appear? Would I look bad for asking at last minute?

Bugging teachers over holiday break is out of the question. I can't think of any acceptable resolution.

only YOUR stuff absolutely needs to be in by jan 1.... email your teachers, your councelor (to send your grades) and most importantly email your regional admissions officer at Uchicago and tell him what you just told us. seriously. but only if youre really serious about it.

Recommendations must also be postmarked by January 1.

Having worked in university administration (but not admissions), my guess is that they want your App in by 1/1 but if the recs are a couple of weeks late, while they would like them there on time, it won't be the end of the world. Remember, you've got to get your GC rec & transcript out ASAP, probably more important than the teacher recs.

All I can tell you is that one of my son's EA recs wasn't sent until almost three weeks after the EA deadline, and it was accepted. True, he was deferred, not accepted, but that doesn't mean anything to your question. You should certainly try.

one of my recs didn't show up. It never showed up on the credential check; one time they told me just to wait a bit.

It still didnt turn up so I asked them if they wanted me to fax a copy (that teacher happened to give me a pile of printed letters). They said that they would continue looking and would still consider my app without the letter and I could fax it to them if I really wanted to,

Not sure when I faxed it but it must have been pretty late and they still said yes to me.

An update: I took lola's advice and emailed my rep and the admissions directer about my dilemma. I figured it was win-win; either they'd tell me to go away and I wouldn't have to worry about applying or they'd say yes. Left a message on my rep's machine as well because I didn't know whether she'd be gone for holidays and I was getting a little nervous because I wanted to know either way. I finally just called up the admissions desk and asked. They said it was fine. Ugh stupid college applications, made me into a freaking stalker. Thanks for everyone's advice!
