I'm going to be a sophomore next year at Cal and I'm starting to rethink my career plans. Would it still be possible to apply to Haas if I've completed Math 1B-53, R1A + R1B (through IB English HL credit?) Foreign lang req (through IB Spanish HL) but STILL need to take the following:

-UGBA 10
-Econ 1
-Stats 20

As of now, I'm an intended CS major and plan on taking CS61B and Math 54 next semester. Is it feasible to squeeze in Econ 1 and Stats 20, and then apply to Haas in winter time? Also, is it REQUIRED to take UGBA prior to applying - or could I show them I'm completing it in Spring ' 15?

If I get into Haas, I would plan on double majoring in CS + Business Administration.

Thank you for all the advice!!!

Do I have to complete all of the requirements before I apply?
No, you may have courses required for admission in progress when you apply in the Fall and planned for Spring. All courses required for admission must be completed by the end of the Spring term prior to starting at the Haas School of Business.

This means that you can take classes during the spring semester after you apply, just as long as you finish all the requirements before you start Haas the next fall.

and for your English requirement, “International Baccalaureate Higher Level Examination in English: Literature (formerly English A1) - score of 5, 6 or 7 satisfies both semesters.” so if you have those scores from english then you don’t have to take any more English classes.

While it’s not the most ideal schedule, I recommend you take the Haas pre-reqs as well. You would have a lot on your plate, but I know a few who have majored in CS and Haas…though it’s pretty rare. UGBA 10/ Econ 1 are not that time consuming and hard and if you have taken Stat IB in high school, then Stat 20 should be relatively easy. However, to have a higher chance for Haas, you would need to maintain a pretty good gpa, and extracurricular activities that you actively participate in (not as a general member, but officer or committee member)

It is absolutely not too late! As the poster said above, you do not need to take all of your prerequisite classes by the time you apply to Haas (I don’t plan on taking Stats 21 until Spring). I would highly recommend taking UGBA 10 before you apply however, that’s the fundamental introductory class for the business major. It would show to the selection committee that you are really committed to business as well gauge your interest in business. If I were you, I would take Econ 1 and UGBA 10 and leave Stats 20/21 for Spring semester.

Interesting, thanks totalcaprice and nenolam for the posts!

I’ll try to fit in UGBA and Econ 1 then…and take Stats 20 in the Spring. Also, just out of curiosity, would the committee instead consider my Math 1B and Math 54 grades if I get an A in 54? I got a B in 53 and hoping to do better next semester…as of now my total cumulative GPA is 3.69.

One last thing. The reason I want to double major in Haas is because I’ve been eyeing consulting recently… however, is Haas really necessary to break into consulting? I understand Haas gives you the chance to network with these top firms, but I just don’t know if it’s worth the number of extra classes, work, etc I’ll have to put in…when I could just try as a pure CS major?

Again, thanks for any further advice/suggestions :)

It says on the website that “If you repeated or have taken more than one course to fulfill a prerequisite you must use the first attempt to satisfy the requirement”, so I guess whatever you took first?

If you’re breaking into consulting, you don’t necessarily have to be a Haas major. Others have gotten into consulting and they weren’t Haas. Haas would help, but it’s not necessary. I know a few engineers who ended up doing consulting. However, it would be useful for you to take intro business classes, and join a consulting club such as BC (Berkeley Consulting, http://bc.berkeley.edu/). There are numerous consulting clubs, so feel free to apply and try to get in (there’s interviews, etc). That way, you get a idea of what consulting is like, and it would prepare you in the future when you apply for internships in consulting (if you still want to do consulting in the future). Though a job in CS would make more $$ than consulting, so keep your options open!

Regarding the consulting question, I think it is absolutely an advantage to have a degree from Haas rather than just purely a CS degree. I’ve talked with people from large consulting firms and they have said that they almost recruit exclusively Haas majors with a couple of Econ majors thrown in if they are exceptional. If you can handle the courseload, I would absolutely do it. That being said, CS is probably one of the most versatile majors at Cal and you can find employment quite easily in many different fields. But if consulting is what you REALLY want, then a business major would be a nice addition to your resume.
