I know this is HSL, but it's where I'll get the fastest response.

Since I applied to colleges, I have won Math Student of the Year, German Student of the Year, National Merit Finalist, and two statewide awards - one for being in the "top 100" students across the entire state.

I was just wondering if I should bother updating my colleges about these awards at this point, or if it is too late in the process? I just found out about a couple of them this week, so I couldn't have done it earlier, but they are pretty impressive awards (so I'm told, anyway), so if it might tip the balance a bit more in my favor I might consider doing it.

So the question is: Is it too late to update my schools? Thanks for the advice guys.

It’s going to vary by school. Just check the websites of the various schools you applied to and see if you can submit updates. It’s likely too late, but certainly no harm in trying. I certainly would, as those are great things to add.

I say send the update. Scenarios:

Gets there in time; another few positive marks on your file

You’re already accepted; didn’t hurt

You’re already rejected; oh well, you tried at least

You’re already waitlisted; step 1 to getting off the waitlist

It may or may not be too late, but try anyway.

Okay I’ve gathered all the facts I want to update my schools with. Couple more questions though:

1) Do I just send each school an email saying “Hey I just wanted to tell you I received these awards since I submitted my app, etc”?

2) Should I send the email to WUSTL, even though I was waitlisted? I would assume so, but I just want to make sure.

Pretty much. Not enough time to mail it. Make it polite, formal, and as brief as possible while doing each thing justice.

Yep; send the update (in a letter via real mail) along with an expression of continued interest. Also, tell them what WUSTL has to do for you (why WUSTL?) and what you have to do for WUSTL (why you, over the rest of the waitlist?).

Haha thanks Billy, I know I can always trust you for a worthwhile response. =)

So should I tell WUSTL about my continued interest and stuff even though I might not be going there if I do happen to be accepted off the waitlist? I’m still waiting on a few of my favorite schools, so if I do happen to be admitted to those I’d probably choose them over WUSTL even though I do really love WUSTL.

I would say still send it. You’re not bound to accept a spot if offered, it’s just a good interest. And if you really love WUSTL, then you can truthfully express your continued interest. If you get in somewhere else you like more, you shouldn’t send WUSTL anything else after that, but for now, it’s a good move and you’ve got nothing to lose.

Is it okay for me to just give my full name as identification? I really don’t feel like searching through emails/documents to find all my “application ID numbers” and stuff. haha

Full name and email address will identify you for emails; full name and regular address will identify you for regular mail.

Oh, and I haven’t forgotten about the thread. I’ll bring it back later.

Awesome, thanks. Got it sent off last night.

Haha I love how you know I know what thread you are talking about.

Good luck.

And there is only one thread; all others are merely shadows on the cave wall.
