I've played violin for 4 years; however, I've recently discovered my true passion lies within the piano. I'm 13 and I'll be going into the 9th grade; is it too late to start? I will practice dilligently if given the chance.
How much do they normally cost? Our family's financial positions is not that great; I have a younger sister, and my mom doesn't work. Although my dad makes 6 figures (Low-Mid 100s), we are definitely a bit restricted. Some pianos may cost several thousands of dollars; what do you guys suggest I do? Thank you.

this is going to sound cliche

but it is never too late to start anything really. And You are still REALLY young..I don't see what you're freaking out about. Granted, it all depends on how much you practice.

if it means anything, Allan Holdsworth started guitar at 17-18 and he's one of jazz guitar's most prominent figures. Also, my friend started guitar a year later than me at 15 years and with constant determined practice he has probably become one of the best players in the area.

I see. Thats very encouraging. The actual problem is getting the piano itself. :D

I suggest either an upright piano or an electric one (preferable freestanding with full pedals). There's a huge range of prices, from the $600 range to the several thousand. Use the navigation bar on the left to pick your price range.

It's never too late to start! You may not become a virtuoso, but you can become a damn good player with dedication and practice. I had played piano for 6 years before deciding to take up the guitar in my freshman year. I still play both.

Pianos aren't that expensive if you look hard enough. I'd recommend an upright piano. You don't have to buy new ones that would cost 1000's, often you can find classifieds in your local newspaper or online that will sell you a good used piano much cheaper (or even for free, provided that you move it).

You cuold buy a keyboard. got one for Christmas when I was about seven or eight, and I think they were only a few hundred bucks. It's really nice and I still use it. :)

Thank you all for your replies. I have hope now. Hopefully, with practice, I will be able to press the keys. ;) I will definitely look into finding old pianos.

Aah, I still dream of Korsakov's "Flight of The Bumblebee" on piano. :o

EDIT: I just found one for $450 on classifieds!! My various gods, help me!

450 dollar electric one right if its a normal piano thats insanely cheaP! i miss my baby grand its like the best thing on the planet its my baby i dont have room currently in my house...though...im thinking of instead of expanding the porch im going to expand my room upstairs and have one giagantic window facing the outside for that and in that small space put my baby grand...it sounds really great and would be auesome if i could

Don't buy off the internet. There are many fake sites. You could rent one for like 100 or so a year or buy one for a few hundred or more.

ps the porch is off my parents room which is right next to mine i have a flat roof next to me so i was thinking of just expanding my room on to the roof and putting my piano there the view would be amazing what i would have while playing my piano

theres some places where u can rent a upright for a couple hundred/yr

Finding a used piano would probably be best if you can find one that isn't too expensive (I'd looove a new piano!), but if you find that's still too much, a keyboard would probably be okay to start with, you could probably find them for $100ish, I think, or maybe a little more. They make some really nifty things now.

It's definitely not too late to start, I've taken lessons on and off over the years, but once you know the basics (as I'm sure you would from violin, that's how I learned), it's so nice to just be able to sit down and play something no matter how structured it is. Good luck!!!

musiciansfriend.com is a legit site. All my musician friends have bought something from there at some point, and I've bought some good equipment there too (my brother got his beautiful $500 epiphone guitar from there).

Yeah, you can find a small basic keyboard for really cheap nowadays. When me and my brother started lessons, that's what we used, but my parents upgraded to a full size electric keyboard ($800 at the time) once we decided we were going to stick with it. If you buy a used one from the classifieds, you save yourself some assembly time (our keyboard took about 20 minutes to put together), but you also have to transport it.

That would be lovely. Reminds me of that cartoon-- "Hey Arnold!" where the grandma had a piano on the building's roof.

Well, the one I was referring to was an upright piano, and it appeared to be in very good condition from the pictures provided. It was advertised on the local classifieds. I think I might buy from the classifieds; they're insanely cheap. And, I can visit the owner and see the piano for myself.

Just came back from first day of school. Oh My God.

how did it go?

My English teacher is Obsessive-Compulsive, my Math teacher is pretty cool but pretty strict, and my Biology teacher is nice, seems not as strict; a bit lenient. I have a 5 page essay due by Monday from English, I already have a Quiz on Monday, two Tests from Bio and Math on Friday, and I just solved a Diophantine word problem from math, and my Bio teacher gave me a log on "Ecosystems"; I have to observe my backyard for half an hour and describe each living organism to maximum possible detail, any changes in weather, climate, observable differences in types of animals observed-correlation. And apparently, the math test will be the hardest one in the course. I have to wake up at 4:45 if I want to eat breakfast, 5:00 if I just want to get by with a glass of water, get to the bus stop at 5:45. The bus is insanely overcrowded; there are like 3 people to a seat, almost 80 people on a bus with a "limit" of 48, and I had to sit on air all the way home on it, with a bad knee to top it off, from which I had to walk 1.5 miles to my house in 100 degree weather.

Not too bad. A little rough, but some have it worse. Back to my essasy :p
