1 Teacher (very good recommendation and I can get more)

I plan to study biology and go on to medical school. I cant think of schools to take off my list. So if you were in my shoes what ones would you not apply to or would you apply to all of them. Also if you could give a reason why. I realize since your not me it may be hard. If you need more information let me know. I am just looking for opinions because I am having a really hard time with this. I appreciate it. I have been asking my parents for help but they are biased because they want me to stay close to home (but they will support me wherever I choose to go). So I am looking for an unbiased third party.

Thank You

I would take out Maryland and BU. Even then, you still have too many match and safety schools on your list.

14 schools is way too much. I ditto taking out Maryland. I would also take out two of your safeties (I wouldn't suggest Eckerd though), Kalamazoo (unless you really want to stay in Michigan), UMiami (not the one in Ohio), and Bloomington.

That makes a total of eight, with enough safeties in Michigan (I'm taking out a lot of stuff in the Midwest because everyone here seems to want to go out of their particular region- California kids want to go to the East Coast, East Coast kids want to go to California.)

So your list would be more like:

Safeties:
Michigan safety
Eckerd

Match
Michigan State
Miami U in Ohio
UMass Amherst (From what I hear, Amherst the town is a really nice college town, but UMass has a lot of problems)

Reaches
Northeastern
BU
FSU

Does it sound like a better list for you though?

what kind of problems have you heard about UMass

take out University of Maryland College Park
Florida State University
Indiana University Bloomington
University of Massachusetts Amherst

why apply to state schools that aren't even your own? it's not worth paying out of state tuition for them, and the financial aid from them won't be generous.

your schools look really random, as if you chose them randomly. For one why is Eckerd on the same list as Boston or NortheasterN?

I guess my list is kind of random I wanted a few LACs on my list (to keep my options open) but I prefer state schools. Eckerd was a suggestion by a friend and I looked into it and liked it. I liked UMass because i was thinking it would be in a good area with Amherst College and other colleges all in that area (but im taking it off). I like the idea of going to school in florida so that is why I was looking into schools down there. A friend is going go to BU and told me I should apply and see what happens and I like the school upon further research. I have heard great things about Indiana. So those are why I am applying to some of those schools. I guess they were kind of chosen at random but I have researched them all best I could. I really have been looking into schools by region northeast, midwest, and then florida.

You should easily get into U. of Southern Mississippi, and I was told by the admissions people that they send more students to their only medical school (in Jackson) than any other Mississippi college.

You could call some medical schools and find out what the feeder colleges are and apply to those. Med school is so competitive these days, you are going to have to have a solid plan for getting in.

What you want to do is investigate how decent the biology departments are of a number of colleges. sometimes not generally well-regarded colleges have a couple of really good departments. For instance, I heard the other day that Texas A&M isn't that great a college, but they are famed for their vet school as well as their business school, I think it was.

Check out Trinity in San Antonio. A friend whose d wants to be a physician toured it and liked it--but she LOVED Rice, although she doesn't have the money to attend Rice.

I don't know very much about UMass-Amherst, but I heard that it has some issues with its budget (the money is limited) and I also heard that the buildings are really, really ugly.

Again, these are things I've heard, not my opinion. If someone who actually attended the schools says something different, I'll agree with him.

Leave ur list as follows:

Reach Schools
- Boston University
- Northeastern University
- University of Miami
- Florida State University: I leave it because u really want to go to school in Florida but just know that for the Out of State tuition u will pay here (and with all the budget cuts going into state schools in Florida) you can get a way better education at Michigan State.

Match Schools
Michigan State University
Indiana University Bloomington
University of Massachusetts Amherst
Miami University Oxford (OH)
Kalamazoo College

Safety Schools
Grand Valley State University

I would take out just about every safety and not apply to any If I were u but in any case I left one safety. I felt this is the best safety on ur list but off course they are all just about the same. Dont apply to more than one safety. Thats how u can reall shorten ur list and still be able to apply to all the good schools u have on ur list. Safeties are all guarantees of acceptances but neither of which u will be attending. why load ur list with 5 guarantees paying $50 at each to apply plus mailing transcripts and what not. save the money and keep all the other good schools on ur list.

Several of these schools are not worth the money. Your best bet is to stay in state, especially if you're looking to go to med school.

I agree with TUOwls 2011, stay instate if you want to do med school. I suggest going to MSU and then try and transfer to Ann Arbor

MSU is my first choice school and I actually like it over ann arbor. Thanks for all your help and I actually narrowed down my list to a much more reasonable nine schools.

BU
Northeastern
MSU
IU Bloomington
U of Miami
Miami University
Kalamazoo College
Eckerd College
Adrian College

I am probably going to be staying in state for the reason TUOwls stated but nothing wrong with keeping my options open.

You gotta do subject tests for BU

Even if you took the ACT?

BU isn't worth it anyway man, just go to MSU or something in state.

Yeah, I agree with TUOwls2011. BU isn't really worth your a look.

now why is everyone saying BU isnt worth a look. just curious

Because it's a waste of money.

again why?

You really don't need to have so many safety schools.
