Too Many Recs?

How many letters of recommendation would you say is too much? Generally speaking.

I currently have five: two teachers, one counselor, and two mentors.

I think most colleges look for around 3 (1 counselor, 2 teachers). 5 may be too many to be quite honest with you.

Yeah, I agree that three is the norm. Five shouldn’t preclude you from admission (I sent five), but definitely don’t send like twenty (and I have spoken to adcoms from Ivy League schools that said they got that many).

I think its too much because I’m pretty sure that content starts too overlap and it becomes repetitive to the admissions reader. I think 4 would be better but sending 5 isn’t going to be that bad. Its up to you.

I think two teachers and one counselor is often enough from an academic standpoint. A LOR from someone outside of school who knows you well may be helpful addition, but think carefully about what a fifth rec would say that the fourth wouldn’t.
