Too much drinking at Colby?

I have heard that the social life revolves too much around drinking, and it got some poor reviews on studentsreview.com
--It's disappointing becuase Colby seems like a great school academically, but the social life............

Anyone?!?!?!?!?

Even if it did revolve around drinking (which would be no surprise since it's quite rural) I'm sure it doesn't mean that you can't seek out your own friends who also hold similar views. At any university you go to bar a few places (like Brigham Young) there will be a drinking scene. But I don't think that should stop your from applying somewhere that is a fit academically.

Our daughter doesn't drink and has made many friends who do not either. She signed up for a chem-free dorm (there are several, not sure but I believe about 1/4 of students live in them), and was initially afraid there would be a stigma attached. It is not the case at all. They find many things to do that do not involve drinking, but will also go to dances/events where kids who drink might go as well.
I would recommend that you request a chem-free dorm, the level of connection and inclusivity in her dorm is really amazing, that really was the right way to go for her.
I would agree on the drinking thing in general, all colleges have that issue. Colby has dealt with it very effectively I think, I know of other schools where her friends had no such choices and have felt out of the loop as a result.
Lastly, alway take website reviews of any school with a big grain of salt.

Thanks momofdd!

Though I no longer go to Colby (I transferred out), I feel I can give some insight. If drinking is a real concern to you, do as momofdd's daughter did and sign up for chem-free housing. There is a surprisingly large group of non-drinkers in campus, and if you want to have a social life at Colby without alcohol, link up with them. If you choose to go the non-chem-free route, there will be a lot of drinking. The social scene really does revolve around alcohol for most of the student body. I transferred to a state school in Virginia, and the drinking scene here pails in comparison. Anyway, good luck with your decision. I think Colby is a great school for those it fits. Sadly, however, it wasn't for me...

oncearunner...why did you end up transferring from Colby?

I, for one, live in "chem-free housing" and don't drink, and I'm having the greatest time of my life. This year, Williams (one of the chem-free dorms) is one of the most active and fun dorms with one of the most tight-knit community feelings on campus.
