should i apply for fafsa, i'm 99.9% sure that i will not qualify. my father is the only person who works in my family and he makes 140k this year. my mother doesn't work and i have 2 brothers(1 older and younger, we have a 2 year difference as i'm the middle child). i think my dad is 50 years old. should i apply, when is the deadline for fafsa??

Yeah, you’ll qualify. I’m in pretty much the same situation and a bunch of financial aid estimators tell me I’ll get some money. You should apply ASAP. You should check when the deadlines for your applying for financial aid for each of your colleges are. A general rule of thumb is Feb. 1st.

Technically, the deadline is somewhere in next June (June of 2011).

I don’t know what kind of calculators you’re running choco, but they’re wrong. Generally someone in that income range is going to have an EFC of 35k or higher (yes, 35k). Pell grants cut off at an EFC of 46xx and you will not get aid from 99% of schools with an EFC that high.

Should you file it? ABSOLUTELY! It is the only way you can take out Stafford loans which are the best for college students. Second, some schools will not allow you to apply for aid after your first year so you should always fill them out just in case.

Btw, we have a financial aid forum just for this reason :).

what are the deadlines for the UCs and CSUs? my older brother is not going to college for the 10-11 year cause he’s going to be in afghanistan. will that change anything??

^ Yes. If he went to college, your EFC would be cut in half (roughly 17k for each of you). Since he is not, your EFC is doubled (ie- the roughly 35k).

I don’t know the deadlines for either of those places- go to the UCs forum (ie whichever you are applying to) and the CSU forum.

lololol. Your dad makes 3 times as much as both my parents’ income combined.

^ And his/her parents make about 7x what mine make. I don’t understand why that’s an lololol moment…

I like how you condemn every post I make.

It’s very nice.

What are you talking about? I don’t remember ever responding to you before this thread. Paranoid much?

ETA: The only one I CAN think of (since I looked back in my post history) was about your school. I think IQ tests are ridiculous and have thought that my entire CC life. Is that what you mean by “condemning” your posts?

Trust me, if I had it out for you (or any poster) then you would damn well know it.

Things always makes sense in the end…

For some reason I find this hilarious. Yeah, I’m evil and am going to hell. :)

My parents make more than that, and we got some money when my sister went to college two years ago. I think back then they had 190-195 thou/year and now they have pushed it down to 180, which they can do since about 2/3rds of our income is actually whatever my father takes out of his retirement account, or something. I think. Whatever. My friend whose parents make 300 grand and aren’t retiring anytime soon doesn’t think she can get any, but she’s going to school instate, so it’s cheap anyway.
If your siblings go to college while you’re in college, you can get a lot more.

^ Ok, even at the BEST schools with financial aid (ie- Harvard) the most you’re going to get with 190-195 is that you have to pay roughly 10% of your income and then at 200k you’re paying full freight.

Where exactly was your sis going that she got fin aid? That is HIGHLY unusual.
