Too much outside scholarship...any ideas?

My D has received about 6k in outside scholarship for freshman year and 5k renewable for 4 years.
After deducting student income $1500, term-time job $3000 and laptop purchase $2500, she still has $4000 left. None of the donors will postpone payment to sophomore year. I'm aware of Yale's policy but also heard they are generous in helping the student keep the scholarship.

So my question is: has anyone had any success asking for a increase in grants (and consequently there will be a reduction in parents contribution), but after the extra scholarship is deducted Yale's grants would stay the same?

Or, Since some of the donors don't limit the use of the scholarship, has anyone be able to apply the extra amount to a summer program?

Have Yale allowed you to use this extra amount in any other program, activity, books purchase, ...?

Any suggestion on how I should approach them about this is appreciated.

I do not see the problem. This year Yale’s grants are calculated so as to consider the 6K in outside scholarships. Next year, when the scholarships disappear (if I am understanding you correctly), Yale’s grants will be adjusted to fill this hole provided other income sources have not.

Descartesz: i think you misunderstood it. When Yale first awarded the FA, they did not take into consideration the outside scholarship. When I inform them about it, they will then apply it first to the student contribution ($4500) and up to $2500 to a laptop, and then they will reduce the Yale grants (yes it will go up again in sophomore year). But my question is if there is any option for my D to use the extra amount during freshman year instead of having the grants reduced.

It depends on the scholarships honestly. For example, one of my scholarships could be used for a summer program, but the other could not. Yale will not decrease parent contribution though, so unless you can divert the money yourself, you may be out of luck (what a great position to be in in the first place).
