Too much $ to bargain for?

Hey, I have a few questions about bargaining for scholarships. Is it possible to get more scholarship money from a school like CCM if I don't have any comparable offers? (It's not that I was turned down or not offered scholarships at other schools; I just didn't apply to any other schools at the level of CCM.)
I really would need like $6,000 to be able to barely afford it and I only got $1,000...Is it even worth it to beg for that much more?

While it is not highly likely that they will increase their offer if you do ask, you can be fairly certain that they will not increase it if you don’t ask. The worst thing that can happen if you ask is that they will say no and you are in the same situation you are in now. On the other hand, if their yield is below expectations for composers, they might just be able to find you the extra $5K that you would need if you ask nicely and let them know that is all that separates you from being able to send in a deposit.

Also, are you certain that $1000 represents the total amount from UC and CCM? I have heard some people say that they got separate awards from each that arrived on different days. That could be worth asking about first.

By the way, if you would care to list your other acceptances in the master list, we would love to have them.

katie, the collective past experience is within the thread here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/886715-2010-scholarship-thread.html

There’s really not much to say beyond what’s already there.

In summary, some are flexible, some aren’t. Some will consider matching offers of peer institutions. Some won’t even entertain it. (I can’t recall specific discussions with CCM with the possible exception of binx’s S, not D , but that goes back 5 or 6 cycles)

It may depend where you are in the relative pecking order. The closer you are to the top, the more they may want you.

Have your financial circumstances changed from the submission of FAFSA? Parental job loss, catastrophic medical issues, death of a parent? These may be worth speaking to a financial aid officer about.

The economy still stinks, many are being more tight-fisted.

It never hurts to try.

Good luck to you.

Thank you so much BassDad and violadad! According to 88fingers CCM was only planning on admitting 2 undergrad composition majors this year so there probably isn’t much of a “pecking order” so I kind of doubt they had much money for composition majors to begin with…
(and the $1000 is only music scholarship, I was already counting on the $5,000 academic scholarship I got)

CCM still may have some money available if all of the other accepted composition students decide to go elsewhere, or if their yield across the whole music school is down for some reason this year. Don’t talk yourself out of trying. One thing many professional musicians need to learn to do better is to actively pursue funding for their work from all available sources. Another thing they need to learn is how to carry on elsewhere when the first source does not pan out. One way or another, this would be good practice.
