Too old for grad school?

Most of my friends who went to grad school were 22 or 23. I am 25 and just finished BS. And feel like i am too old for grad school now since i be 26 next year. Am i wrong here? Or its comman for people my age to go to masters this late?

I would like to refer to a line of lyrics from one of my favorite bands, as indicated in my moniker, 311:

"Life's not a race"

****loads of people get their masters degrees a lot later than you would... many graduate students are in their 30's and even 40's... you're still very young for a grad student.

Neena, get your head out of your booty booty. You are never to old to go for more schooling.

gosh.

A friend in my MS department just turned 30 on Sunday. He has one semester left towards his MS. He didn't go to college directly out of high school, spent a few years as a firefighter, went to junior college then to a 4-year university. After getting his BS he took another year off working before starting grad school.

I actually was the second-youngest in my department (22) when I started 2 years ago (the youngest was 5 months younger than me). I am officially graduating in December (just need to hand in the thesis, already defended) and now people my age are just starting their MS degrees.

Don't worry about starting late, you will find there are many others in your position. I actually regret at times that I went to grad school directly after undergrad (but want to keep going, I want to be done with school before I have children).

I was thinking the same thing when I applied for my M.A at age 25. I was very surprised to find that while there are a few 22-24 year olds most people in my program are in their 30
s and 40
s with the average being about mid to late twenties.

You have to remember that graduate school is not like undergrad nobody really cares about age most likely because its an educational choice that people of all ages make, not jsut 18 year olds who need to stay on mommys insurance like undergrad is.

Graduate faculty tend to like older grad students rather than 22 year olds fresh out of college.

Neena,

I'm extremely young in my program, and I'm 23. The average age for MAs here is around 27 or so.

You're fine.

I plan on entering grad school -- MA studies, or straight to PhD studies if my GPA is high enough -- at the age of 29 (I entered university at 24). I'm not at all concerned about being "too old." I could very well have my doctorate by 33... which is not really abnormal in this day and age.

A fellow grad student in my chemistry department is starting at 55 so you definitely are young enough.

it really seems like to me that older grad students are respected by faculty and admin more.

i know of several PhD students in their 40s and 50s, so no, you are not too old

I went back at 36 and at 46 and more times before. 46 was a little old. 36 was not an issue. This was in math and science. I think that other disciplines would be even easier.

My mom goes to college now...she's 45 and she's working on her acossiates degree...yupppp

so you're not old at all

Average age in my program is probably 25 or 26! I'm the youngest at 21 and the only one right out of undergrad, the oldest will be 32 next month. Actually I've heard that grad schools look favorably upon people who have been out of school awhile, they like to bring in people from all sorts of backgrounds. Don't worry about it!

omg

i saw this thread and expected to see someone in their late 30s or early 40s saying they are thinking about grad school. 25??? pfff....

i'm planning on starting next year (i'll be 30). which means i'll likely be about 35 when i finish.
