Too ordinary

I’m finding out that Im the typical Asian male with math/science and violin.
How big of an issue is this? Will geography help? How can i portray myself differently?

if thats all u do it might be a little tought =) but umm you can differentiate yourself from other asians by joining different clubs or trying out some sports =P

Start your own fashion empire. Win a beauty contest. Start a rock band. Do something that people wouldn't normally associate with a "typical Asian". That will help you differentiate among other applicants.

You'll be fine outside of ivies and SMC.

Would it be hard to get into an Ivy if i'm "ordinary"?

reference my advice. do something original if you want to consider yourself out of the mainstream.

Plenty of Asian males who are good at math/science and play the violin get into Ivies. If they didn't, it wouldn't be such a stereotype and you wouldn't be worried about all the competition. However, you do need to make sure you're up there with the best of them.

I think it's safe to assume that it is always hard to get into an Ivy.

mootmom is right -- none of the ivies are a sure shot --- for anyone. Have some confidence in yourself and your accomplishments and portray this on you app, essay and interviews.
