too preppy?

Hi all! So I'm going to be a senior in high school this year, and I visited Colgate a few months ago. I absolutely loved it. It was beautiful and the academics seemed great. However, something that worried me is the fact that its students have a reputation of being snobby, preppy, rich, and all white. Honestly, I know most of the schools I look at are going to be full of rich, white people, but I'm mainly just worried about the snobby and preppy (polo-wearing, etc.) aspect. I do like to dress/look nice, but I wouldn't describe myself as a total prep... and I really can't stand snobby people. Can someone just tell me a little bit more about what the students are actually like? Thanks!

…what the students are actually like?

If you took a campus tour and/or stayed overnight I am sure you have an impression already. It’s subjective, after all, and I suppose you can revisit the campus when all the students return in 2 weeks.

In the meantime, and to put things into context, why not use the search function, enter “colgate preppy”, and retrieve some threads. I just did so and found 2 from last February that were good reading.

Good luck with your search!

Thank you! :)

would you prefer if the students are black rich and preppy? or would you prefer a school with poor white and poorly dressed? I think you should perhaps refine your wording less you sound kind of prejudice yourself!

Hello,
My son is starting his first year at Colgate in a week…he is from rural upstate NY and we are none too wealthy. No prep schools or trust funds here (smile)!

We are in the midst of packing- while he has a couple of new T-shirts and jeans most of his stuff is around three years old and some from thrift stores. I am not worried about him fitting in at all. Maybe the girls take the fashion thing a little more seriously. From what I have seen, a more clean-cut, neat appearance prevails- otherwise the fashion sense did not seem that much different from other private colleges that we visited.
Hope that this helps.

How has he liked his first one and a half years there?

I think it is more about respect. I like dressing up not to be pretentious but to show respect for the school I am attending as well as for the teacher. I don’t go to Colgate but if you see people dress “preppy” I think it is just New England. Most kids I know just don’t come rolling into class in sweatpants and a hoodie.

Where are you from? Not being from New England was a huge culture shock for me. Yes, almost everyone wears jcrew and burberry and yes people care a lot about material things there.

best thing is to go and see. colgate is big and so there are different kinds of students there. definitely there are the preppy ones and there are also the non-preppy ones.
