I was wondering if anyone could give me their opinion on which school, duke or uva, is less preppy/greek-oriented?

University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Way to read his post…

From hearsay I’d say they are about equal, with maybe UVA being more preppy. Someone want to look up greek life stats?

for duke:

Percent of men who join fraternities: 29%

Percent of women who join sororities: 42%

for UVA:

Percent of men who join fraternities: 30%

Percent of women who join sororities: 30%

pretty much equal…

I think you could find schools that are very similar to those, that do not have a big greek life or preppy children.

“Preppiness” and Greek life do not always go together, although they often do. Bowdoin and Brown both strike me as equally preppy, for example, although neither has significant Greek life.

People use preppy in different ways. Do you mean “preppy” as in old-school, high-WASP, to the manor born, Topsiders, family fortune but modest clothes, summer-is-a-verb preppy? Or do you mean more Southern preppy / mint juleps / pink-and-green where’s-the-party preppy? Or do you simply mean upper middle class kids who dress nicely, who are termed “preppy” by some but aren’t preppy in the true sense of the word?

This.

Also, what exactly is wrong with preps?

just to clarify, I have nothing against preppy people. It’s just that from experience at my school, they aren’t the people I become friends with, and i was just wondering which of the schools had the lesser influence of these people. By preppy I meant mostly the polo, flat-brim hat, drinker guy, but I think either definition would work with what I’m trying to find out.

Duke would seem to have a much higher % of students from the Northeast, so perhaps their brand of preppiness might be more of Pizzagirl’s first [more-insufferable] type. I’m guessing Duke would also have more Ivy wannabees who would be overcompensating (for not getting in Princeton, Yale, Harvard, Penn, or Dartmouth) in all things prestige-oriented.

UVA is more preppy. And flat brim hats aren’t preppy.

You have it wrong; nothing can be “too” preppy.

Being from the Northeast doesn’t make one preppy. Frankly I think a lot of the Northeast LAC’s – the Colbys, Bowdoins, etc of the world - are far more preppy than a Duke.
Btw, preppy isn’t necessarily synonymous with high academic achievement (it can be, but doesn’t have to be).

The kind of guy who wears brand new polos, or the kind of guy who wears his father’s old polo shirt that’s been around for a while? Part of the preppy I’m talking about is old money, and not necessarily “new” and “designer” everything. Anyone can go buy a Ralph Lauren polo at Costco these days; that does not a preppy make.

Time to re-read the Preppy Handbook, I think!

Well I’m sorry to have offended the hardcore preppies on here

Lol. My feeling is that UVA is more “preppy,” if preppy means wealthy, mostly white, not necessarily “worldly.” Duke has its fair share of preps - but its much more diverse overall and seems to have less of the “old boy” feel.

whaaaaat

duke was way more preppy to me.

UVA’s state school status helped it in that area, from what i could tell.
