My brother was talking to one of his friends that goes to University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) and he said he did not like it because it was "too southern." What do you think he means by this???

What part of "too southern" should we translate for you?

What does Southern mean?

South of the Mason-Dixon line.

The characteristics of southern.

spend a weekend in mississippi

How southern is it compared to Georgia Southern University?

Ole Miss is a place where fraternities rule, football is all-important, and the Civil War is referred to as "the War Between the States".

That should do it.

Also where except for two or three high quality graduate programs, the classes are terrible, and admission is extremely easy.

I would think that the bad academics and huge greek culture aren't particularly southern... although the South as a whole seems to worship Ole Miss, so maybe I'm wrong.

I beg to differ about "the South as a whole" worshipping Ole Miss. There is a particular segment that does, but as a Southerner, I promise you that is a gross overgeneralization.

I believe you mispseleled "the War of Northern Agression."

Judging from your multiple misspellings, it seems likely that you are in the camp of Ole Miss worshippers.

I'm surprised you didn't include the classic Dixie cup reference.

You say those like they're bad things...(though I do find the Civil War infatuation of many Southerners somewhat bizarre).

The problem with Ole miss is that there is less/no mixture on the student body i believe that 90% cames from south states ..but universities like emory and vandi has a very diverse student body with students all ovesr the states.

Misspelling "misspelled" on purpose is an Internet tradition that is older than the Web. It's irony.

I typed "aggression" incorrectly and by the time I spotted it, the inscrutable forum software would not let me edit it. Mea culpa.

I'm a third-generation Californian, went to college at the University of California, and now I live in Washington. I don't have a dog in the north-south fight. I could care less about southern perspectives on the Late Domestic Unpleasantness. Would you like to share the "Dixie cup reference" with us? I've never heard of it.

Begging your pardon, sir. I apologize for impugning your regional identification.
Seriously. As to the Dixie cup reference, I would be curious to know if any of you Yankees out there have ever heard this. I am ashamed to admit that when I was quite young, I would hear people say this, and I don't think they were kidding: "Save your Dixie cups! The South shall rise again!"

Okay, now if you don't know what a Dixie cup is, it was (is?) a very popular brand of paper cup.

To me, Southern means:
-Homecooked soul food
-POLITE youngsters
-Basketball and football
-Sweet tea
-Taters and maters
-Sense of pride in history
-Strong dislike of transplanted damn yankees
-Y'all, fixin' to, and other such expressions
-Country, gospel, jazz, bluegrass, and R&B music
-"Coke" used for any carbonated beverage
-High humidity but mild winters
-Magnolias
-KFC and Waffle Houses are landmarks used to give directions
-BBQ and potato salad
-Cotton and tobacco
-Carbs come from pancakes, grits, and biscuits
-Knowing what chittlins are
-Spices: salt, pepper, hot sauce, BBQ sauce, and Ranch dressing
-Expeditions to stock up on supplies when meteorologists call for at least 1" of snow
-School is canceled for 1" of snow
-Huge family reunions
-Trips to the mountains to see the leaves change color
-Yellow lights just mean go faster...aka "Carolina Green"
-If you stay on the same road, it will change names at least 3 or 4 times

I love the South. :)

warblersrule: Thanks! I loved that (and I, too, love the South!). :) How about adding-- refusal to use turn signals? I've always thought that stemmed from living in small Southern towns, where everybody knew where everybody else lived, and where they were heading, so no need to alert anybody with a turn signal. What do you think?

Yep, that can be added. I've noticed that, but I thought it was just another characteristic of crazy Charlotte drivers.
