Too tall for lightweight rowing?

My son is a 17 yr old high school junior who just started rowing this winter. His coach indicates that he has potential to row in college. He is 6' 4 1/2" and weighs only 151 lbs. He is very athletic, naturally slim and muscular. My concern is that he will be considered "too tall" for lightweight rowing. Any thoughts?

Don’t worry, especially since you can’t change his height. First, he doesn’t have to be a LW rower. If his erg time is competitive for his weight, HW coaches will also be interested. Also, since he just started rowing, I’m assuming that he will bulk up considerably with more training once he gains more muscle. Second, if he easily stays below 160 with training, LW coaches won’t be too concerned; arguably, several of the very best elite LW rowers in the US are 6’3" or taller. If you add the U23, there are more.

Thanks. I appreciate the advice. I was just concerned after looking at the roster of some of the LW college programs since I didn’t see any LW rowers listed that tall. I thought he might be caught between two worlds…Too tall for LW and too light for HW!
