My friend's son just returned from taking the ACT and was told "you have until 2:20 - Good luck!" Aren't there proctors saying something like "begin the English section, you have 45 minutes" and "5 minutes remaining for the English section." Next they proceed to the Math section, Reading, Science etc. taking a break where appropriate.

I guess my question is. Do they give students a sense of the alloted time for each section and a warning. No just announcing breaks?

Yes that's definitely against the rules. You are supposed to have a certain amount of time for each section. It is against the rules to go forward or backward to other sections. Did he start it at 8:30? Because if you start it at the normal time, you finish at 1 =x. I wish I had his proctor.

me too!! especially since i had more than enough time on english! the science was killer
but yeah that's definitely against rules...the proctor is supposed to give the time for each section and breaks not the time for the whole test

your friend may have gotten special accommodation form the ACT administrators for more time on the test.
