Top 10 All Time Songs (objectively)

Ice Ice Baby was a ripoff.

How are “impact of the songs, impact of the lyrics, creativity of the songs,” objective criteria? Wouldn’t an “objective” list take into account record sales, genre, downloads, # of times the song topped the charts, etc? I’d say you might as well just ask people what they believe are the Top 10 All Time Songs, with no “objective” pretense.

Again, those are opinions. And you’re dealing with people in totally different areas of music. Elvis was the “king of rock and roll”, MJ the “king of pop”, Hendrix was known for his amazing guitar skills, and Bob Marley dominated the reggae scene. They aren’t very comparable.

And that was the first time I’ve ever been RickRoll’d through text… haha.

Ok this is a subjective list of objective ratings (sorry for the bad title)

subjective=pick your 10 favorite songs

objective=pick the 10 greatest songs (which is still subjective, but not in every sense of the word)

Ok, I will try to give my reasoning.

You can just compare Hendrix to Jackson on the impact that they had to American History.
Jackson was way more popular to Hendrix, but Hendrix was the headline act for Woodstock, which was far more important.

Talent as in Hendrix was the lead guitarist and lead singer of a successful group-how many others can you say that about? Talent as in everyone that plays guitar tries to be like Hendrix. I don’t know if you can say the same for everyone in pop. I have to say that MJ was the greatest dancer of all time in music, but he got a lot of his moves from people like Fred Astaire. Hendrix revoluntionized guitar playing.

You can compare the lyrics to Redemption Song by Marley to Billie Jean by MJ and you can see that Marley was a better writer (this is obviously an opinion, but like I said, it’s not just mine-most magazines agree).

Michael Jackson had a really good voice, but it was limited (high range). Freddie Mercury could sing in any pitch, as he covered a lot more octives.

Elvis and MJ as a performer…that’s a lot harder. They were both super popular and were both great, but I like I said, look at Rolling Stone’s list (which is not my list-which is objective atleast that it is not biased by my view) and you can see that Elvis is way higher than MJ.

EDIT: MJ=Michael Jordan for me…first time I’ve actually used it for Jackson.

Hey I’m not saying MJ is bad. Like I said, he’s one of the top 10 all time, as he was succesful both when he was young and old, in a group and as a solo artist.

But if you take an objective poll of subjective opinions (if you understand that paradox), I am almost sure that Elvis would be rated higher than Jackson.

^Music is too subjective to rate. IMHO Michael Jackson is a music legend that comes once in a generation. As an entertainer, i’d venture to say that he’s the best of all-time. He has the highest selling album of all time, his songs are timeless and no one can dance better than him. But again, that’s only my opinion.

Okay, then. You want objective, you got objective:

I couldn’t hum any Michael Jackson songs if you asked me to…

@vinnyli - Actually One Sweet Day holds to record for most weeks at No.1 not for most weeks on Billboard Hot 100, and the you misspelled Boyz II Men. Also, there’s no official count for Michael Jackson’s Thriller album, some say that it has sold over 100 million copies. I don’t know of any official count. Sorry, I couldn’t help but correct you.

Subjectively, “A Change of Seasons” by Dream Theater. I do think that it is a song most people can appreciate, regardless of their music tastes. And what the heck is an OBJECTIVE top 10 song list? And you actually think RollingStone magazine has done anything worth reading?! Shame on you! Pardon my musical elitism but I have a passion for music.

Double shame on you for believing that popularity indicates how “objectively good” a song is.

ha, my top ten is a lot different:
Shattered (OAR)
Collide (Howie Day)
Stop and Stare (OneRepublic)
Apologize (OneRepublic)
Let it Rock (Kevin Rudolf)
Viva La Vida (Coldplay)
It’s Not My Time (3 Doors Down)
I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing (Aerosmith)
Mercy (OneRepublic)
Heard the World (OAR)

not in any particular order…
