Top 10 Prestigious Public Universities THREAD II

The other thread is full and I would like to start a new one here....

Here's what I think:

University of California- Berkeley, University of Michigan - Ann Arbor

University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill, University of Virginia

University of California- Los Angeles, College of William & Mary

Rutgers University - New Brunswick

University of Illinois- Urbana Champaign

University of Iowa- Iowa City

University of Wisconsin- Madison

University of Maryland- College Park

Ohio State University- Columbus, Pennslyvania State University

University of Washington, Purdue University-West Lafayette, University of Florida

Rank your top 10.

I updated it.

NRC rankings (average nonzero scores):
1 UC Berkeley
2 UC San Diego
3 Michigan
4 UCLA
5 Wisconsin
6 Texas
7 Washington
8 Illinois
9 Minnesota
10 North Carolina
11 UC Irvine
12 Virginia
13 Purdue
14 Arizona
15 Penn State
16 Rutgers
17 UC Davis
18 Ohio State
19 Indiana
20 SUNY Stony Brook

I personally think that overrates UCSD and underrates Ohio State.

It would be great if everyone posts the program rankings for each of the public universities:

I will start with Rutgers because I am more familiar with it:

Rutgers is diverse. The students of Rutgers–Newark have made that campus the nation’s “most diverse” for 13 years running in U.S. News & World Report’s ranking of America’s Best Colleges

For undergrad experience:

W&M

UVirginia
UCalifornia
UMichigan

UCLA
UNorth Carolina
Ga Tech

W&M is in a class by itself. The premiere public LAC. Closer in scope to Haverford, Amherst, Davidson, or Brown. Completely different mission statement than the research U’s from other states. The real competition/debate is between the other schools listed.

Everyone please post statistics and rankings for other public universities. Lets create a comprehensive list of it. It would be great if someone could make it sticky to make helpful for applications regarding public universities.

And if you can, change name of the thread to “Comprehensive list of Public Universities program’s Rankings and Statistics.”

Thank you.

univ of minnesota is underrated

Ohio State should not be on a top 10 list. Although they may have a good program here or there, overall, the University is not traditionally ranked very high compared to other universities.

UVA and Florida should both be near the top of any public university ranking list. Both are very good schools, very competitive and commonly accepted as two of the best public schools in the country.

Why Florida? Yes, the student body (which they bought through bright futures) is competitive but they don’t have the highly ranked departments other top publics do.

Neither does UVa. Few of its depts are Top 10 or even Top 20.

True barrons.

This is a ■■■■■ post. Rutgers is not a top 15, let alone top 5 public. It is too busy sinking cash into its money pit of a football program instead of wisely investing it in academics:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/28/opinion/nyregionopinions/28NJdowling.html</a></p>

Some of the Rutgers faculty have formed a group called the “Rutgers1000: Friends of Rutgers Academics” to protest the NJ state university’s prioritization of athletics (primarily football) over academics.

In the Times Higher Education (THE) – QS World University Rankings 2009, McGill was ranked the best public university in North America, and 18th in the world. .

[Times Higher Education](<a href=“Times Higher Education home | Times Higher Education (THE)”>World University Rankings | Times Higher Education (THE))

THE QS is generally considered craptastic.

Yup, there seems no reason whatsoever to go outside of the North America to get an opinion of the international ranking of North American schools… oh wait a minute.
