Top 10 Public Universities based on SATs

There are some surprises. Maryland is ranked very high. SUNY Binghamton is ranked higher than I expected. It has the SUNY stigma, so I was surprised. Binghamton might be an anomoly...notice the lower SAT 75th percentile.

Sorted first by SAT 25th percentile, then by SAT 75th percentile.

1250 1420 Georgia Institute of Technology-Main Campus
1240 1450 College of William and Mary

I don’t put much stock in those Illinois numbers for 2 reasons.

The vast majority of students take ACT.

Take out engineering students and both ACT and SAT scores for Illinois plummet.
Numerous students from my low achieving hs get into UIUC w/under 24 ACT.

The vast majority of students at Michigan take the ACT too.

Novi, close to 40% take the SAT at Michigan.

Collegehelp, last time I checked UIUC’s 75% SAT was 1400.

Thanks for the correction Alexandre, I thought it was lower.

sorted first by ACT 75th percentile, then by ACT 25th percentile

Collegehelp, where did you get this data? According to UNC’s CDS, the mid 50% ACT range for the 2009-2010 admissions cycle was 26-31. And I have never seen Cal ACT ranges.

http://oira.unc.edu/facts-and-figures/data-summaries-and-publications/common-data-set.html

Alexandre, the CDS is probably a year old. These numbers are 2009-10 and are based on a careful definition of who must be included in the freshman class.

Not so collegehelp, UNC’s 2009-2010 CDS clearly states 26-31.

What I’m really interested in is to see the breakdown of Michigan’s, UVa’s and UCLA’s SAT by college. Because I don’t think it makes sense comparing Michigan, for example, and G-Tech with SATs alone as indicators.

BTWm, which amongst these schools superscore SATs?

Alexandre, I can’t explain the discrepancy. The IPEDS data was reported to the US Department of Education by someone at UNC Chapel Hill.

P.S. Actually I can explain it…
IPEDS says the 26-31 was for 2008-09. The 2009-10 CDS contains 2008-09 data.

I would go with the CDS.

Maybe those are the stats for UNC Charlotte and not UNC-CH?

Alexandre, next year the UNC CDS will say 28-31, not 26-31, because it will use the 2009-10 data.

Berkeley’s is 1220 - 1470

If you include public LAC’s SUNY Geneseo is right up there actually ahead of Binghamton.

SAT 25% 75%
1230 1380
