I was wondering if top 10% is good enough for schools with 20-30% acceptance rate (ie. UCLA, UC Berkekely, USC, Cornell, Rice, Johns Hopkins, Norhtwestern, G-town, Vandy, U Chicago, etc.) because I barely made top 10%, but I have good ec, sat scores, rec letters, etc...or do these colleges mostly take only 1-5% applicants?

It depends on your high school and the size of your class. I have a friend who applied to G-town early action (they have 20% early acceptance rate) and she is 1 unweighted and probably 5-6ish weighted (top 1%) and was rejected, even with great ECs and sat scores. Don’t count yourself out though; there are plenty who are in the top 10% who get in. Just focus on writing great essays!

It is neither necessary nor sufficient.

(The proof of this theorem is left as an exercise for the reader.)

newest newb: you sure its not necessary? (your word play is confusing :P)

and college happy, my graduating cless is about 1300 kids, its a very competitive school, like if you’re in top 25% at my school, you’re basically in at UT Austin

@newest newb, top 10% isn’t good enough? :[

It won’t assure you a place, just like it won’t deny you a place.

All schools take ranking into consideration, but also take into account the excellence of the student body. You might be in the top 50%, and everyone in the top 50% might have a greater-than-30 score on the ACT. Which is still pretty good. This is a hypothetical example, but what I mean is, don’t stress over your rank.

alright, oh and hopefully this show how tough my school is, 74 kids at my school got national merit last year, oh and, we have the highest number of AP tests taken west of the mississippi river, and 2nd most in the nation

Most of the schools on your list will accept under 20% this year.

is that becuase of the crazy-competitive applicant pool? and im guessing, you wont know how next year will be, as of right now, right?

If anything, the acceptance rate will go down for most schools (from last year). More and more people are applying these days.

It depends on how competitive your school is. From big, less competitive public high schools, acceptances to top schools are usually only given to the top 1-2%, whereas competitive schools with good track records with colleges may see acceptances as deep as the top quarter to Ivy League schools and their kin.

bump 10 char

lol @ top 1-2% from big public high schools being accepted to top colleges

^ Agreed. I think most big public high schools are lucky to regularly send their vals and sals to top schools.

I question how much “most AP tests taken” is worth as a metric. How many kids are in your class? What’s the average SAT/ACT score? Honestly, though, the best way to answer your question is to look at what kinds of kids were accepted to those colleges from your school in the past. Where were they ranked in their class? Ask around. Your school doesn’t have Naviance, does it?

Elite college admissions are complicated and often have just as much to do with whoever’s reading your file–do they like you? how tired/cranky/giving are they feeling today?–as you. Personal experience inclines me to say yes, it is entirely possible to get into these schools with a top 10% class rank, even if you are otherwise run-of-the-mill, but there are a lot of variables. Your subjectives. Different institutions’ policies. How did you get to be “only top 10%,” anyway?

well, i WAS like top 3% but i gave up and partied junior year-1st semster, and now im trying to get back on track

1300 kids, umm idk avg sat/act but 74 kids made national merit, but yea, ill ask around

those schools – at least the first few listed – don’t have 20-30% acceptance rates. Up to rice? they have like… numbers in the low 10s.I know for a fact that la and cal have rates near 11-12%

with that said, 99% of all the people admitted are in the top 10%.

?? i went on collegeboard and ALL thse colleges had an acceptance rate between 20-30%, where do you get ur info from(not trying to criticize, just curious)
