Top 10% Scholarship

Does anyone know if we will be getting the Top 10% Scholarship. It would be very helpful for my college costs and I know if might help some of you too. I heard from many of my friends that A&M is already "passing" out those scholarships so I was wondering if UT were going to "pass" them out too.

You have to be in top 9% to get into UT. Does it mean everyone gets this scholarship? I have nt seen any information on UT website of such a scholarship.

This year it’s top 9%, like texaspg said. I’ve never heard about this scholarship before…it might be something exclusive to A&M.

That scholarship is suppose to be given out by all public Texas universities. I don’t know if UT does though.

Not true. It’s not just exclusive to a&m. If you were eligible for the scholarship you should have gotten a letter in the mail and you had to have filled out your fafsa by a certain time.

The name is misleading. It seems to be a need based scholarship and not everyone who gets admitted can get it.

OP - Have you filed a FAFSA by March 15th?

I have friends from A&M who are not need based and have received this scholarship. I submitted my FAFSA since the end of January.

I’m in the exact same situation. I haven’t gotten mine from UT yet either and I also filed in January. We should probably call the Office of Financial services and ask about it. If you do, lemme know what they say.

UT doesn’t give scholarship to anyone.

I don’t know about the incoming freshmen, but for me, my top 10% scholarship has already renewed itself and is in the financial aid I received for the 2011-2012 school year.

** This 82nd TX legislature just released these funds (with a reduction in funding from last year) on June 30, 2011 and I spoke with UT Financial Aid about this today and FA packages are being re-written. If you qualify AND they have enough funds your package will be re-written. I did not ask what your EFC had to be to qualify (ours is fairly low finally!! because we are paying multiple tuition and have kids at home still) **

And to whoever says UT does not offer scholarships anymore is not properly informed. There are some, you just have to dig around for them, qualify for them and have them granted. :)

Well, I received my updated finaid letter in the third week of June. My EFC is like 700-800 dollars and I was also given work study. So, I really really need this scholarship like badly so I can buy books and for dorms.

@collegeshopping: Do you know by when we will be receiving these updated award letters?

So if I meet the eligibility requirements then I should be receiving it?

Bump. Anyone?

As mentioned, eligibility and funding availability are two different things. Being eligible will not automatically give you money.

According to the Office of Student Financial Services, the state legislature just approved for us to get the scholarship. We found out two days ago when we called the OSFS office. It’s $2,000

Yay!!! did they say when they will be updating the award letters?

OSFS said that Texas legislature has not decided in regards to the top 10% scholarship yet.

I got the top 10% scholarship before but i just transferred to UT. Will that somehow affect the renewal?

I actually spoke with the OSFS today and they said that kids that had the grant last year (ie, renewals) were going to be funded. They just figured out what that means in dollars this week. Now they are reviewing the incoming Freshman and are going to spread the dollars as far as they go. The reduction in this program was 16% so who knows how far it will all go. They said the counselors would actually start reviewing on an individual basis starting tomorrow. Now this was not said, but I suspect they will start with the qualified students with a 0 EFC and go up the list until there is no more money. Also, eventhough they only auto admitted the top 8 this year, this scholarship is for top 10% so if you were in on holistic review and you were in that pocket of 8.1%-10%, you still qualify for this scholarship. The question becomes if there will be enough money.

They said that it could be the end of the month before they update the info.
