Gutrade is a troll. The only language he understands is inflammatory words with the intent to cause needless battles. Seriously.

Call me a southern hick, but I also think Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and West point are the colleges everyone has heard of. Best of the best.

Hm...I'm not too familiar with West Point..

West Point is really good. I'm a southern hick too. ahaha

I'm actually impressed that Stanford is regarded highly in many Asian countries.

Ranking according to prestige in Japan would be something like this:

Harvard

MIT/Stanford

Princeton

Columbia/Yale

I think most people have not heard of other schools, even the other Ivies.

This seems to be an Asian-focused opinion as far as 'International Prestige'. To that end, you should take a look at a WSJ article this week (sorry no link) about American B-schools setting up shop at universities in Singapore and China. Duke is mentioned among MIT and UChicago as having been hotly pursued by multiple suitors. I know Duke has a smaller global alumni base than most of these Ivies constantly mentioned who have been pumping out world dominators for a century (or more), but obviously those in the know consider Duke's "brand" factor, in at least the business and medical field, to be at or near the top.
Also, consider the impact that UChicago has had on global economics, particularly in South America. There are entire economies (Chile) that have been planned and run by Chicago grads. That is prestige, not whether the girl you are trying to pick up in a bar in Tokyo has heard of your college.

Good post Indy.

In regards to whether UCLA should be on the list, I can't speak from an Asia-centric from perspective, but I recall that when I was in France, a student there told me it was considered really cool (by French students) to wear t-shirts of american colleges around as they were so rare. After Stanford, UCLA shirts must've been the most popular.

Well, in Japan, the UCs are very well known and highly regarded. Remember that the Japanese universities have a serious slant toward publics being better (Tokyo, Kyoto Universities), with the occasional private like Keio and Waseda getting in the mix. So, public doesn't have a stigma there as it does here in the US.

I found that the name UCLA was well-known and respected. For the right reasons? Beats me. Do I care? Not really.

I agree that UCLA is considered rather "cool" in Japan along with the city LA itself. However, in my opinion, UCLA is famous, but perhaps not considered "prestigious" along with Harvard, MIT, Stanford. But obviously, the name UCLA would help if you wanted to pick up a girl in Tokyo.

The truth is, UCLA and UC Berkeley are well known and respected on a global level. When it comes down to it, outside the United States, the name 'Berkeley' rings more bells than 'Columbia' and 'UCLA' beats 'Brown'. I am not discussing the merit and accomplishments of any of these schools, I am strictly talking about the name-brand value of these institutions.

It is nice to hear that in Japan, public schools aren't discriminated against on such a high level. It seems like many people in America have a very 'private-or-die' mentality when it comes to colleges.

<3,

I found this ranking of international universities on some uk site. Don't know what they base their rankings on.

It's a ranking system that was based on the opinions of professors and academic figures on a global level. A few factors/opinions that went into the completion of this list were quality of education, research, and international prestige.

people are very weary of this ranking system and tend to favor the one that is annually released by USNews. I think many people are put off that several public schools are ranked above many of the popular private institutions.

<3,

Izzie Bear

IIT is not on there? k your list in automatically invalid

your opinion is automatically invalid.

Hey confidential,

I know you people might call me dumb or something, but I have never heard of UCLA or Berkeley universities before. Also, what is Caltech?

r u on drugs

what do you mean?

"I know you people might call me dumb or something, but I have never heard of UCLA or Berkeley universities before. Also, what is Caltech?"

You must be joking. Either that, or you were born under a rock. How can you not know about Caltech? It's the C in HYPSMC. But I can see how it's easy to miss. It's only the best science/math school in the world. No biggie.

Haha dumb? No, you must be- check the dictionary under "ignorant."

Cal Tech is very MIT like school located in Pasedena, California. It is extremeley hard to get into CalTech and the education is extremely focused on the sciences.

Some people in the US haven't heard of Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge. Many people haven't heard of Williams, Pomona, Amherst, Swarthmore. Many of these people also live happy lives, and who cares if they don't know about some school that doesn't really affect them? Anyway, insulting people beause they aren't familiar with some specific college is uncalled for. The acronym "hypsm blah blah blah" is not every common, even on the internet, and people use a lot of acronyms on this website.

Sounds like a troll to me.
