Top 10 U.S. Universities in Terms of International Prestige and Name-Recognition

Yeah, I was shocked myself to find how much my UCLA name carried in Japan. I can't say I was upset by it, but it was interesting to see.

I think proximity has something to do with it. Or at least that's what was argued at the UC Center in Tokyo.

I still can't get over finding a UCLA clothing section in a Japanese dept. store.

heh, UCLA.
My gramps doesn't know what princeton is, my grandma doesn't know what yale is. They both know UCLA and UC Berks tho.

U Chicago is there too actually. That'd be number 10ish as well.

Sad but true:

My girlfriend's high school valedictorian got into Harvard, Princeton, and Yale. She decided on Princeton. Her family is all from Hong Kong, and they popped the question, "Where are you going to college?"
"I'm going to Princeton!"
"Oh, Princeton? Where is that?"
"It's in New Jersey."
"Oh, is that in America?"

And in 3 minutes, a little old Cantonese lady destroyed the feelings of elation of one hardworking soon-to-be Princeton student.

SAD.

is freaked out

If you substituted 'Stanford' for 'Harvard', uh, i'd be your girlfriend....exactly.

Aiyah. Good thing my girlfriend is probably going to UCLA (slow bio transfer...). Even her family in Hong Kong knows it.

wait wait wait -- just because of this little canto lady, she's not going to Princeton anymore...she's going to UCLA?
I mean UCLA is awesome, and I don't really question her choice, but a Canto lady is a bad reason to do anything (I know : ) I live with Canto ladies...)
--edit---
Oh! sorry, I thought your girlfriend was high school valedictorian. Oops. Ok, up there, i meant if you subbed H for S then I'd be your girlfriend's high school valedictorian : ).

No no no, the girl was my girlfriend's high school valedictorian. She ended up going to Princeton.

My girlfriend, on the other hand, is going to UCLA because for whatever reason it is her dream school. Granted, all of her siblings and father, who are all fabulously successful went there, but why else? It's not like I went...oh nevermind. LOL

But no, my girlfriend wouldn't take that kind of crap, believe me.

[edit] Beat me to the punch.[/edit]

Gah, my girlfriend's popo is evil and demented and twisted. I'm very frightened of her.

From my experiences, it goes something like this:

1) Harvard
2) MIT
3)Stanford
4) Yale (Bush, Clinton, etc)/ Berkeley/Princeton

In general, tech schools (or schools with awesome engineering/math departments) are waaaaay better known in Asia than liberal arts schools.

This is just my opinion.

Harvard

Stanford

Princeton

Berkeley

Yale

UPenn

MIT

UCLA
(big drop)

Columbia

Chicago

it's neat you and your girlfriend will be at the same school tho, UCLAri : ). Haha, what are you frightened of a popo for? I bet she's littler than you are!

No, sadly I have graduated, and she will just be starting. Now, before you think I'm some dirty cradle robber, let me explain:

I'm a year older, but I transferred in a year. I took three years after transferring so I could do a minor, study Chinese, go abroad, and do internships and study in Washington, DC.

My girlfriend is a bio major who loved the lab work she did at her CC. So, she stayed for three years.

I'm not dirty! LOL

And popo is scary because she causes trouble with the littlest of words and actions!

Harvard

MIT / Stanford

Berkeley

Yale

Princeton

UCLA

Columbia

Tech schools tend to be more prestigious internationally.

Brown has 0? I like Brown but i have to agree... somehow certain people dont appreciate this good school :(

"I like Brown but i have to agree... somehow certain people dont appreciate this good school "

unfortunately, if brown doesn't even have much name-recognition in the US, then it probably doesn't have much name-recognition internationally.

"Tech schools tend to be more prestigious internationally."

but caltech is missing from your list!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1) Harvard
2) Yale
3) Princeton
4) MIT
5) Stanford
6) U Penn (Wharton)
7) Duke
8) UC Berkeley
9) UCLA
10) Columbia

1) Harvard
2) Yale
3) Stanford/Princeton
5) MIT
6) University of Pennsylvania
7) Cornell
8) UC - Berkeley
9) Johns Hopkins
10) University of Michigan

Hmm...UCLA is making it more than I would have expected.

"4) Yale (Bush, Clinton, etc)/ Berkeley/Princeton"

Clinton shouldn't count because he was only there for the Law School.

Along those same lines, should Bush count as a legacy admit?

Let's not get overly semantic here...

ppl, please don't put CIT as it refers to carnegie institute of technology
