yep, edinburgh's not bad...AND its name is pronounced funny :D. you brits you.

for Chinese people it goes something like this:

1.Harvard
2. Yale/Princeton/MIT
3. Berkeley/Stanford
4. Never heard of anything else.

Actually, I met a girl from Shenzhen when I was in Japan, and she had only heard of Harvard.

Oh well.

Who cares what people in Asia think??????????

yea i know kk19131, let's not do business in asia cuz we don't care about them...

cough hahahhaa

4 pages of replies and not 1 listed a school that HAS to be among the best known internationally (or at least dispised in many parts of the world) -

United States Military Academy at West Point

Harvard

MIT

Grandparents: So what is this "Brown." Is it like Harvard?
Me: Uhhh
Grandparents: It's ok as long as it's like Harvard.

foundnemo - haha, oh no...
Well there's only one answer to their question then, huh ;)

when i went to india and i told many of my cousins and friends about colleges they knew only a few, in terms of international prestige they did something like:

Oxford University (yes i know its in england but they conisder oxford all mighty)

Harvard

Princeton

Yale

MIT

UC Berkeley

Stanford

they didn't even know brown, upenn, cornell, dartmouth, or any other college not mentioned on that 7 college list lol.

nobody in india knows or even cares about west point, i highly doubt its internationally reknown..

You guys rank Georgetown, Berkeley, and UCLA pretty high. I didn't know those schools were so well regarded, but I'll take you guys' word for it.

Anyway, this is how I personally think about colleges:

Harvard

Yale/Stanford/Princeton

MIT

Caltech

HUGE GAP

Duke

Columbia

Dartmouth

UPenn

Cornell

Brown

Johns Hopkins

University of Chicago

Northwestern

Berkeley

UCLA

USC

UCSD

My Own:
1.) Harvard
2.) Princeton
3.) Yale
4.) Stanford
5.) UPenn
6.) Brown
7.) Columbia
8.) Wake
9.) Duke
10) Berkeley

Former Cardinal (Stanford), Current Deac' (Wake Forest), Future Tiger (Princeton)!!!

Personally I think its:
1. Harvard/Oxford
3. Princeton/Cambridge
5. Yale
6. Stanford
7. MIT
8. UCLA/Berkeley
10.Johns Hopkins

[quote]
1. UCBerkeley -- 665
2. Harvard -- 643
3. Oxford -- 560
4. Cambridge -- 541
5. MIT -- 484
6. Stanford -- 420

Harvard

Come on, are you serious? Berkeley is well known, but ranking Berkeley's prestige as higher than Harvard's or Stanford's? Even the Berkeley people know that that doesn't pass the smell test. Berkeley is not more famous than Harvard or Stanford. Let's face it. Very few people are going to turn down Harvard or Stanford in order to go to Berkeley unless the goal is to save money.

A lot of top prestigious LACs have no recognition whatsoever in China/Hong Kong. Here are probably the Top 10 (US colleges, because Oxford/Cambridge would be at Top 10 overall..) according to my relatives living in Hong Kong:

Harvard

Yale

MIT

Stanford

UC Berkeley

UCLA

Caltech

...and pretty much nothing else. Heh.

For me, though, the Top 10 that brings "wow!" to my mind (definitely personal opinion here!) are:

Harvard

Yale

MIT

Stanford

Julliard (that's only because it's my completely fantasy childhood dream, though)

Columbia

Princeton

UChicago

Johns Hopkins

UC Berkeley

hmmm. for me..

Harvard

Yale

Princeton

Stanford

MIT

Cal Tech

Columbia

Brown, Dartmouth

Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Upenn

Harvard, Yale, MIT, IIT, University of Oxford, Stanford, University of Cambridge, Tokyo University, University of Michigan

Tokyo Daigaku (University of Tokyo) is so incredibly overrated it's ridiculous. Keio is probably a better "thinking" institution than Todai.

Hell, Tsukuba is better in sciences than Todai.

Harvard
MIT
Princeton
Stanford
Cornell
Berkeley
Yale
UCLA

are the only ones that have good name recognitoin.....Yale is a arts college for the most part, so internationals don't gush at its name. The science/engineering schools matter much more internationally. Also, I don't think colombia, brown dartmouth make the cut name recognition. Berkeley is definielty there along with ucla.

In my own opinion:

Harvard
Yale
Stanford
MIT
Princeton
Columbia
Cal Tech
Berkeley
Brown

Duke loses out, in my view, because it is still a regional school and Penn, Dartmouth and Cornell just don't bring that same "Wow" factor if you say you are going there. I based my rankings on how much awe is instilled in a person when a student says they go to the aforementioned schools.
