Hey--I'm a new user, but I'm just wondering if students who are in the top 10% of their class would have to write the essays for admissions...and if the SAT/ACT scores would matter.........do you automatically get accepted to in-state universities/colleges without any other criteria other than be in the 10%?

No one is exempt from writing essays and I have never heard of a school omitting them unless you get a special app. (some schools send out postcards to apply and they will waive fees, essays, etc.)

SAT/ACT scores matter a lot. Top 10% means you are in the top 10% of your class in regard to your grades (GPA). You can have a high GPA and score poorly on the standardized tests and that tells them a lot about you. You can also score high and that tell them you belong in the top 10%.

I don’t know of any state schools where you will be an auto admit based on class rank.

oh…well, I’m in the state of Texas, and supposedly, people have said that being in the top 10% guarantees admission…but I’m just confused whether or not that guarantee overlooks the test scores and essays…

Anyways, thank you ^^

Florida Atlantic University. In top 20% of your class? ACCEPT!

Texas A&M. In the top 10% of your high school class (and a Texas resident)? ACCEPT!

Indiana University - Bloomington didn’t require an essay. I think they look at grades and test scores before, then they decide who’s in, deferred, waitlisted, or definitely not in.

My sister had a 4.0 and she applied to University of Washington and got in. The funny thing is, at the end of her essay she wrote “That is why I would love to attend the University of Michigan.” XD
