Top 100 Scholars

For those of you who were invited to compete, around what day/time did you receive your letter?

bump. please. :).

I got my letter today about it! I am so excited!:)

CONGRATS iamnotabronte!

You've worked so hard on your college applications -- I just know you'er going to end up someplace perfect for you.

Denison will make you a great offer I suspect. Enjoy your scholarship visit. When is it?

thank you so much!:)

This year, I don't think they are doing the scholarship visit/interview thing. In the letter, it said that all 100 (or less) of us had to have had an interview on campus already (which I have), and to submit the competition essay by March 7th. Is that different from last year?

I am very, very excited to have been allowed this opportunity!:)

You have a respectful and grateful attitude iamnotabronte. It will serve you well in this as well as the rest of your educational life. The sense of entitlement I see from some of your peers is not nearly as becoming. I am very happy that you have this great opportunity and from your thoughtful and thorough posts I'm sure you will present yourself well. Good luck. I'm a fan and I'm excited for you.

FresnoMom

FresnoMom:

Congratulations to your son!

Wolfman

Tell your S congrats!:)

Hi all

Thanks for the well wishes! I just finalized travel arrangements for my son to have his on-campus interview at Denison in late February. My husband is tagging along.

Imnotabronte: Where do you live? Is Denison your first choice?

Cur: Didn't know you frequented the Denison boards! Is your daughter applying here?

Wolfman....how are you?? Thanks again for all your help last fall. You and weenie were incredibly generous in sharing information and encouraging my son to apply.

FresnoMom

Can you tell me a bit about the Top 100 Scholars program? Is this different than the National Merit scholarship application process? What awards or other benefits does a Top 100 Scholar receive?

Thanks

Chestergrover

Welcome!

I don't know if the official title is "Top 100 Scholars" but Denison chooses approx 100 applicants (out of 5000 that applied this year) to apply for their top two awards. The Mary Carr Scholarship is valued at $30,000/year and is awarded to 15 students and the Legacy Scholarship is valued at $22,000 and is awarded to up to 30 students.

The student doesn't have to apply for these scholarships (I don't think). My son just filled out the online application for Denison and then they contacted him last week about applying for the two scholarships.

The next step is submitting an essay and each applicant has to have had an on campus interview between 1/1/2005 and 3/7/2006.

Hope that helps.

My daughter was accepted today with a $15,000 Founders scholarship. She didn't apply for it.

snorky

Congratulations to your daughter!!!!! That's awesome!!!

If you in the top 100 scholars competition you will receive money. At least 50% scholarship I believe. They've reshuffled the scholarships and renamed them from last year. My child was a top 100 scholar.

I got an e-mail saying that my essay had been received for the Top 100 Scholars competition, and that decisions regarding the competition would be sent out before the week of 3/20. best of luck, everyone, and congrats!:)

iamnotabronte...

you are so on top of things! Dear son has not started (but he's been sick)

The best of luck to you!

Thanks, FresnoMom. I'm not sure if she'll go to Denison or not - but thought others might want to know that even students who don't apply - and aren't in the running for the very top awards - can get substantial merit scholarships at Denison. They seem to be quite generous.

Hi all

My husband and son just got back from Denison. They both said it was just a beautiful beautiful campus! Everyone was so friendly, including the admissions office.

My son wasn't sure what to expect for the interview but it ended up just the two of them chatting (no surprises, no hard questions).

Here are a few more observations:

-it wasn't as "preppy" as my son thought it would be
-it appeared that there were more girls on campus than boys
-he didn't see any other asians on campus but he still felt that he"fit" in (this was probably the most important reason why my son needed to visit)
-the music program looked "smaller" than he had imagined (I'm not sure what he meant by that but he doesn't plan on majoring in music)

My son said that he is SO glad that he visted and compared to other LACs in CA, he actually preferred Denison! Denison, being so far away from CA is still in issue for him, though.

For the six months, several of you have very generously emailed me personally to answer specific questions. On the flight over at 2 am in the morning, my son reread all the correspondences. He said that, more than all the literature that Denison sent, those emails were the most helpful.

So thanks weenie, Wolfman, Palidad and one other CCer (sorry, forgot your screen name) whose daughter goes to Denison!!!

Hi FresnoMom,

You're welcome! I'm glad he had a good visit. No streakers?! ;)

One thing I don't know if I told you is that Denison charters a bus to make MANY trips to the Columbus airport around break times. They go every two hours for several days around break, and the kids catch that back too. It is free, they just have to sign up for it. I have found that very convenient as I know my son will get to the airport on time and back to school without worrying about a taxi. It is, of course, still a pain in the neck flying kids all over, but oh well.

If he has any questions about the music department, he really should email my son. Let me know. (Maybe he'd feel more comfortable emailing than calling. He's also easy to IM.) It IS a small department. There are good things about that and not so good.

Good luck to your son.
